I've never been a gym-goer, I don't have the time (3 kids) or the $$ (3 kids!!) What I did invest in (with mucho help from MIL) was a Bowflex. Granted, I couldn't be on a commercial for them, but I did drop a lot of weight and MANY inches. It's just a lot easier for me to get dressed and walk 20 feet to my exercise room than do all that is required to actually GO to a gym or fitness center, and I get to do it as early or late as I want, without having to worry if it's open.
Bowflex does have a payment plan if you don't happen to have about $1300 to shell out all at once.
Best,
Brie

being that i'm still a college student it's much easier to use the gym at my college since it's "free", but thanks for the advice. I'm not really trying to become all muscular...just tone up a bit more in the arms and thighs.

ah, I should pay more attention, LOL. Free is good! Like any exercise regimen, it really depends on how you use them (reps, weights, frequency) as to whether you will bulk up or not. 2-3 times a week should be enough to help you reach your goal of toning. I understand the motivation thing though too. It's easy to find something to do other than hiting the gym, esp. when you are a student (I'm a student too!)
Good luck to you in any event.
Brie

Welcome aboard, System!!
Not mucho to add since all our resident smartie-pants already dropped the knowledge...
But congrats on your 'comeback'! And we hope you stick around!

my routine is odd during the summer...i don't really go to the gym right now, just running once or twice a week, 3 miles. during the college semester i'll be back to running every other day for about 30 mins, then weight lift for about 15 mins. occasionally i'll ride the bikes in the weight room, but that's boring too.
i do leg lifts...about 90 pounds, sit ups, the arm bar things that you pull down in front of you with 50 and 60 pounds....haha sorry guys the terminology was really bad on that one...i don't know the names of the machines. i also lift above my head....60 pounds...bench press 50 pounds.
each of those are in 15-20 reps, alternating...since i'm only in the weight room for 15 mins, that's about 2xs on each machine.

Welcome aboard System77! And GREAT ADVICE EVERYONE! sniff...my little kids are growing up
Stretching: All good advice and website.
Lifting: Since it looks like you want to gain muscular definition and strength then you probably want to do lighter weights and higher reps. That would be 12-15 reps with weights heavy enough so that the last few reps are difficult.
And you probably want to do a total body routine since you're not a 'gymrat'. Start with the largest muscle groups first, then work your way smaller. Glutes, thighs, back, chest, shoulders, arms. If you'd like a list of specific things to do, let me know.
Motivation: Make a game out of it. Or, (my personal mantra) make some goals and go about achieving them. Give yourself a reward for every week you accomplished your goals. (A small, non-food reward people.) Hook up with some other people there at the gym and lift together.
Give me a couple more days and I'll think of some more motivation stuff.
And thanks for the props, Genie!

Hi! And welcome. What I try to do is run a mile and then stretch. When you're in the stretch, hold it for about 30 seconds. Same thing for cool down.
