I guess all the police and national guardsmen sent to protect the items must have a natural resistence to these toxins. |
I would think that the police and National Guardsman have been given a impromptu course on the proper way to collect the debris. You have to figure that he authorities are afraid of what some people might do with the wreckage.

I heard that too. I think they were referring to the different types of fuel and other side-reaction chemicals formed from the explosion. Probably a good pair of gloves will protect you. Most likely, there would be only residue remaining, no fumes or anything. Besides that, I'm sure they don't want people moving the debris for investigative purposes, or taking debris as souvenirs.

I agree that they don't want souvenier/ ebay collectors to pick up the items. I think OL point was extremely valid in the fact that a good deal of anything harmful was burned off in the explosion/reentry.
My main point was that they tried to use a scare ruse to keep people away rather than stress the importance of informing authorities of where pieces landed, but let them lie as they are important to investigate as a accident.
I thought it was ironic that while warning general public to not get within 150 yds of debris because of possible toxins that then local authorities with no special protection stood on top of the items.

Yeah...either tell the truth, or show the authorities in HazMat suits! They won't get away with that tactic too many times.

I wonder how long until someone is selling a piece of debris on Ebay?

We had a Haz Mat call the other day, and the Dept. of Defense, would not tell us what was in the containers, that were leaking. Our fire chief told them, if that is the case, clean up the mess yourselves, and we left.

I just read it has already happened - Ebay took it off their site. Sickos.

I've been watching this for 3 hours...we're getting extra coverage here I imagine because of our proximity to both the debris and Johnson Space Center and how many affiliated with the space program are here...very sad time for this community.
It sounds like there is a lot of debris in the dallas metroplex as well as lufkin/nacogdoches area, I too just saw the doplar (sp?) radar of it.
I'm interested to hear from copdotcom1? I know they have everyone on high alert and I imagine he had a good possibility of visual up there....
this reminds me of the challenger, I saw that at school and remember being very scared and not understanding what I saw. |
It appears that the shuttle began breaking up in this area. I was late getting off work this morning and was driving home about the time it happened, but didn't hear anything like people are reporting. A Dallas television station camera man did film the shuttle as it came through. I saw the flm on the local news this evening and it appeared that the craft was coming apart at that point. But due to the altitude and speed it appears that the debris field starts quite a distance east and south of the DFW area. It is very sad and also so shocking since shuttle flights have become almost routine now.

History buffs will also recall that the Apollo 1 crew of Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee all died on Jan 27, 1967.
Bad week of memories for NASA. My heart goes out to the families. I can't imagine the magnitude of pain and shock. Our base immediately lowered the flag. Even my son and his friend (both 11) felt the magnitude of the events.

a sad day for nasa and our country...but there were some warning signs that possibly went unheeded...I'm not a naysayer on things like this and it's way to early to speculate on what the actual cause might be...but I hope for the sake of all those who lost love ones and for all those devoted to the space program that it doesn't turn out to be something that could have been easily prevented...

Interesting that by 200 ET yesterday a review committee was already formed. Sounds like to me they were expecting something to happend, just not the whole thing blowing up.

Here is a very interesting article that is highly critical of the shuttle program...I think it's time that we as a country ask some very serious questions of NASA and find a new direction for the space program...
