Debris finds are overwhelming the po po and FD in E. Texas, and they have had to activate the guard.

The babysitter here watching JJ and Hannah was not even alive for the first disaster, I was just telling her about where Greg and I were when it happened.
This is one of those moments that you always remember where you were when you first heard about it.

I was looking forward to getting out there and running this morning. I almost didn't go when I started watching the coverage and getting news online. I made myself go out, and I'm glad I did. I feel so much better in many ways. With the anniversary of the Challenger just a few days ago, that makes this feel like we've had these 2 catastrophes so close together.

They have the Nacogdoches fire chief on tv saying debris is all over his town and no one is reported injuried--which is amazing to hear as he describes what his town is like at the moment. He says state and national guard is on the way to help as they are overwhemlmed. A weather radar shows the debris coming in and it is centered right square over the middle of his town.

I wonder if it was a fire and how the fire was started? So sad. I remember when the Challenger blewup on take-off, but this is the first spacecraft to have an accident on re-entry. I feel so bad for their families.

This is unreal.
I've been watching this for 3 hours...we're getting extra coverage here I imagine because of our proximity to both the debris and Johnson Space Center and how many affiliated with the space program are here...very sad time for this community.
It sounds like there is a lot of debris in the dallas metroplex as well as lufkin/nacogdoches area, I too just saw the doplar (sp?) radar of it.
I'm interested to hear from copdotcom1? I know they have everyone on high alert and I imagine he had a good possibility of visual up there....
this reminds me of the challenger, I saw that at school and remember being very scared and not understanding what I saw.

So sad.
At CNN.com they have short biographies of each of the astronauts. Two whose jobs seemed to be biological experiments. I hope there isn't anything for the folks on the ground to worry about.

I think those experiments had to do with growing yeast in space etc to see how it does??

I'm not sure what you mean, but if you're wondering if contamination from their experiments would be dangerous to people on the ground, there is nothing to worry about. The heat from the fire/explosion would kill/sterilize anything biological.

You two are the first people I thought of this morning when I saw this.....you aren't close enough to have heard anything? They said it was really loud......
Well said, early....and very eerie that it was so close to the Challenger anniversary. I remember that very well and it was just awful.

I completely understand the myriad of reasons for people to not touch the debris where it landed (Investigation purposes, possibly nat'l security et al).
But they news and experts keep warning about the staying away as the debris might have toxic hazards associated with it.
I guess all the police and national guardsmen sent to protect the items must have a natural resistence to these toxins.
