Posted: 06/11/03 - 17:36 Post subject: worst job interview?
yes, i had the pleasure of my worst job interview two days after i ran my half. it was for the Waukesha Public Library (what a bunch of snobs...old fashioned approach to library science). Very bad when your interview starts out like this:
So, you came up here just for this interview? (and I'm thinking, well, yeah...uh, oh). and I say: yes, the interview and to run a race with some friends.
one of the three, the associate director: the Madcity Marathon! how'd you do?
I say my time and what race I ran, commenting that it was ok for me but kind of slow for a lot of more experienced runners....
associate director: I never came in under two hours. So, you think that's slow??? Interesting. (and I'm thinking, it's a pleasure to meet you all. i just blew this interview.)
And got the rejection slip in the mail today.

I actually think slipping a running experience into an interview is a good thing. My last couple job offers I think definitely were helped by it. Showing your dedicated, committed, healthy, goal oriented, all that good stuff comes across from a runner and makes a good employee. Sounds like that old assoc.director wouldn't have been easy to deal with had you raced him and BLOW HIS DOORS OFF!

say tell you what. Let's race, if I win I get the job. You win I leave. That is incentive.

The person you interviewed wasn't a 'Yasso' was it, Shel??
Sorry to hear the news! I've got my first 'phone' interview with in the next week. (but on the same note, I talked to the Regional manager for Lilly today and I think I said 'awesome' two times )

Just don't say "killer" during the phone interview...I think the drug companies would frown on that. Just a thought.

Most of my interviews were for liquor stores and pizza joints. The only real one I ever had was for the company I work for now, so it must have gone okay...

my favorite question is the one with "no right or wrong answer".
well in that case i'm just gonna say "well you need some of this, and some of that, you can really pick one specific one."
and if they say you have to? "well i'm sorry they are all equally important, i don't see how one can be more important then the other"
i'd hire me. i don't know why some of the people i applied at before didn't hire me. but hey, hortons rocks the casbah and now i've got a bitchin' reference to roll back on.
ps. your interagator needs a kick in teeth "i'm sorry we don't hire people here that are smarter then us"

Well, if it makes you feel better, I've been interviewing a lot too lately and have had some good ones and one pretty bad one (yesterday - I do believe I said "like" accidentally... - but she looked so mean I don't know if I could work for her anyway).
I think having some common ground to discuss be it running, biking, a shared job experience, etc helps the interviewer remember you in a positive light (for the most part).

Sounds like the AD was just jealous of your skills! Cough it up as a learning experience and move on. A lot more quickly than that AD, too.

lol, Yasso?
And saying awesome twice is a much better indicator that things are going really well during the interview in comparison me uttering: um, no that's not what I meant.... (ack!).
Good luck to you! You'll win them over, I'm sure.

So funny. The best thing to do, I suppose, after one knows he/she has blown an interview...or hasn't blown it but got that not so good feeling is to reject them before they reject you: send them a letter: thank you for taking the time to interview me. It was a pleasure to meet you and see all that your library has to offer; however, another library is looking much better than yours! Thank you for your interest in me.

Shelee - You'd better brush up on your UBB skills before that next interview.
