Posted: 10/22/02 - 15:26 Post subject: why interviews are bullsh*t...
because unless you have job experience nobody wants to hire you.
for the love of god, no one in the world wants to hire a kid with a 3.25 GPA 1st year university under his belt, honor student 4 years running in high school, 2nd in his class, advanced academics and all.
howsabout a big F*CK YOU to all employers, who are too chicken sh*t to hire a kid, that will work hard for them, and will make them ridiculousy happy to have hired, unless the kid actually can not without a prayer in the world do the job at which point the kid would rather quit for the good of the business.
if they think i should spend a year at mcdonalds first to earn some "experience", they have no damn right to think i'll come back to them.
here's a spoon. eat my @ss.
i'm going to go make one of their competitors money.

POST OF THE DAY
Your 'spoon' line was an instant classic, blue!
But sorry about this, sounds frustrating. Stay positive. Sometimes good things happen to good people, so keep that chin up, smile and sleep with whomever you have to get on top!

Welcome to the business world. Sorry your first taste was so bad. As you said, take your business somewhere else.

Get a degree and most of that stuff will all go away.
High school is over. Nobody cares what anybody did back then.
Don't take this as me saying this is right or wrong or fair. This is just how the business world tends to work.

Back during my HR days...experience was nice and all but what I looked for was 'sharpness', enthusiasm and drive...

Ouch. Sorry Blue. I remember, many, many, many, many moons ago I asked a similiar question, "How the hell are you supposed to get work experience if no one will give you your first job?!".
Keep trying. And don't forget, it's not what you know, it's who you know. Do you have any contacts? Friends already working? Friends of your parents? Spread the word you're looking for a job. Someone you know might be able to help.

...hmmm, where's that file. Oh yeah, the big fat one. My complete pile of rejection letters. Literally several hundred. I'd wanted to burn them awhile back, but my wife said I should keep them as a reminder. With enough practice interviews are a walk in the park. I think I can bullseye the answer on just about every question in the book. Don't let it get you down Blue. Keep your eye on where you want to go and you'll land the big fish ..btdt.

Blue, anybody who can invent the line "Here's a spoon" will do just fine in the work-a-day world. Trust me, there is a company out there that wants to retain your services...just keep looking. They are looking for you.

I like to share these stories anytime interviews get brought up...
--Never call you old boss a 'b.tch' during an interview.
--Never ask for a ride home after the interview.
--Try not to cry.
--If you're going to put your email address on your resume, you might now want to use that slutbag67@.... address.
I've got more but I can't think of any right now...

My college had a Career Center that helped place students with employers. Some were internships, some regular jobs. But the jobs were related to your major. Because the school was in a partnership, that helped get around the no experience clause.
Check and see if your school has something similar. You never know. (I think many companies aren't even hiring interns right now. )
Also, be patient. There are tons of people with degrees and a lot of experience that haven't had a job in months. Business is about making profits, so companies are in a time where there is a great deal of talent/experience that are available to work (and at lower wages).
People with degrees, experience, and families are ahead of you right now. When the economy turns around, your experiences now will make you more savvy because you won't take your opportunities for granted.
That doesn't make your life any easier, but maybe it helps to understand what is going on in the business world at the moment.
This is unrelated to the main topic, the flipping burgers comment made me think of something that I just read about Lean Gantt.
He was a cadet at West Point that had over a 3.0 GPA and was a star on the football team.
His only problem was that he didn't read much as a kid and had a limited vocabulary - which caused him to flunk his Junior year of English, twice.
At West Point, if you fail a class twice you are out of the school. He signed up at a local school and took 2 English courses and a Chemistry class to show he was serious about getting reaccepted.
He had to work at McDonald's to pay for it because his family was poor. He worked at the same McDonald's that his Army football team mates would eat at on Fridays before games.
It was a very humbling experience for him.
To make a long story short, he got straight A's and was allowed to return to West Point after a year out. This is what he said about the burgers:
"I learned a lot though. I remember when I was in high school, people I had known would come back from college and go to work at McDonalds or some place like that and I would think, 'They must be failures, what's wrong with them?' I found out life isn't that easy or that simple. I think I grew up a lot." - Leon Gantt.
