There do exist strapless ones. I know Reebok makes one. I just don't know how good they are...

Figure on spending at least 100...polar is pretty good. Look for one that does lap features too. Also I would look for one that allows you to set upper and lower limits, displays an average hr when done, show you max hr for the run and show your time in youe zone.
I have one with 5 zones, although I only use three, regular training, easy training and temp/race/speed setting (I have no upper or lower limit set)
I would also recommend one that shows you overall time along with current hr.

I use a chest strapless one when I ride on the trainer, you have to place your thumb and forefinger fore and aft on the watch to get a reading.
I really like it, and it does the trick for me. The only thing I don't like is that you have to place your fingers on the watch to get a reading.
I was a Polar user for a number of years, and really liked the model that I used (which coincidently has found new life with a new owner).

I recommend the Polar S series (I have the S210)..Lots of cool functions like interval timers, OwnIndex, HR zones, etc..

I've got the Ploar a5 model. I think the box has a picture of an 80 year old lady in a velvet jogging suit using a walker.
However, it is one of the cheaper models around and simple to use. My Timex Ironman does all the fancy schmancy stuff I need for complex data modeling of my training runs.
For the HRM, I just need my freaking bpm or whatever the heck it tells me.
When did you get a coach?

I have a polar M21 that works pretty well...I haven't used it in over a year, perhaps I should dust it off...

I have the Polar A5, pretty much bottom of the line, still about 100 bucks. I really like it, although I don't do anything with it except stare at the little numbers on runs. I have figured out how to turn off the beeping.
I like the HR in the fact that it will not let me wuss out. When I think I am dying, I can't breathe, I feel horrible, I can look down at the little watch and see I haven't even hit my target zone yet. Then I straighten up and run right again.

I've been looking around for a decent cheap HRM, and the Nike C3 HRM looks pretty good. It's only about $60 and it will still give you time, chrono, and time in zone.

I have the A5 model also, works for me (and believe me I am a simple person) I especially love the calorie counter.
