Posted: 03/17/05 - 01:08 Post subject: whether you are for or against the war in iraq...
it seems to touch all of our lives sooner or later....
one of my employees' brother in law was killed in iraq late last week, his body returns home tomorrow...
sgt donald griffith was a hero ... the wives of several of his comrades have phoned my employee's sister to let them know the sgt gave his life to save the life of his friends, comrades and their loved ones...the sgt will be awarded 2 medals of honor posthumously.
i didn't know sgt donald griffith but i know a member of his family and i'm touched by her pain...
My employee's comments to me...'I believe... heroes are people who do what has to be done, when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.'
rest in peace sgt...good war or bad war, you are still a hero in my book...

Thank you, Sgt Donald Griffith.
You gave it all for people you never met.
May you rest in peace, knowing though we honor your sacrifice, we can never fully give you the thanks you deserve.

An Iowa soldier died in Iraq on Friday while trying to protect his unit, his mother said Sunday.
Army Sgt. Donald Griffith Jr., 29, e-mailed his sister from Iraq at 1:30 a.m. Iowa time to tell her he was doing fine and that he "hadn't been shot at in weeks."
But that evening in Mechanicsville, Diane Griffith received a call from her son's wife. She knew immediately that something was wrong, she said.
"He died a hero saving other people's lives," Diane Griffith said.
An Army spokesman would say only that Donald Griffith was killed by small-arms fire in the Mosul area. Diane Griffith said she heard her son was either shot or killed by a suicide bomber; Army officers told her he was trying to save the men in his unit, she said.
Donald Griffith had been in the service for nine years. He graduated from high school in Las Vegas and moved to Mechanicsville with his family about 10 years ago after his father, Don, retired from a 20-year military career.
Although Griffith had lived in Mechanicsville for only a year before joining the Army, it was home to his family, which includes his parents and six brothers and sisters.
He was a member of a Stryker Brigade Combat Team, stationed in Telefar, Iraq. His unit was based in Fort Lewis, Wash., where his wife, Stacy, lives. He had been in Iraq since September.
P.J. Colclasure , 30, was 10 years old when he first met Griffith in Las Vegas. He said he doesn't have a childhood memory without "Don-Don" in it. The two were inseparable through their freshman year of high school; Colclasure then transferred to a private school.
Colclasure, who is in the Air Force and stationed in Oklahoma, said he'd kept in touch sporadically with Griffith over the years, but the two hadn't seen each other for about a decade.
"Having that 10-year void was really no different from just talking to him last week. Our friendship was that strong," Colclasure said. "He was my hero."
Griffith told his family he was on security duty in Iraq, but his mother said he wasn't able to tell them any specifics about his job, other than that he was proud to be in Iraq and serving his country.
"This is what he wanted to do," Diane Griffith said.
Army officials told the Griffiths that Donald's body would arrive in the United States within 10 days. A memorial service will be held in Fort Lewis; funeral arrangements in Mount Vernon were pending.
Griffith was the 25th Iowan killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
