I leave all my stuff in the car and tie the key through my shoelaces. I'm a sicko when it comes to carrying anything in a race...can't do it.

Same here. The only thing I've ever carried in a race was my stupid inhaler. And this year haven't had to do that thankfully.

What haven't I done? Most races I am alone but have my car so just take my car key. For NYC races where I park my car then take a bus and two subways, I have been known to run with T-shirts pinned around my neck or hanging from my shorts/pants, with my car key and ID/emergency cash in my pocket. I literally have scars from my car key: it's moved so much in the pocket that I bled.
I recently purchased a tanktop with a side pocket (by Brooks, I believe) to throw my key in, which should solve most of these problems for me. I also have a terry-lined wrist wallet that velcros on and zips open to hold everything I need. On shorter training runs where I don't wear my fuel belt, this carries a lot (spare MP3 battery, lip balm, ID, house key, emergency cash) and isn't too uncomfortable.

I usually put my key in my key pocket in my shorts. For tri's I leave everything in my transition bag out in the open. Cash, ID, Keys the whole kitchen sink.

I've done this too, but I've just used a small plastic tub to wash my feet off!

I've got several pairs of shorts with lots of pockets! They are not your traditional running shorts but work just as well in my opinion. I've always got stuff to carry.

In my opinion, the key pocket in shorts is the only way to go. I don't know how I ran without it. I like suckering a friend into watching the race too.
