you know that last mile repeat...
when you feel like you're dragging at the track, what do you do or say to yourself to give yourself the extra push to get it done? I usually have to tell myself not to pump my arms so much and use the extra energy to move my legs faster. I also started envisioning racing faster. Seems to help. Any other ways to motivate yourself?

Watch "Without Limits" or the other Prefontaine story before you go to the track.

I struggle with the repeats in the middle. The first few are easy because I just got started and the last few are easy because I'm about done.
I'll sometimes picture myself behind a competitor or on the last 1/4 mi. of a 5K and just pull through that way.
Last night when I was doing a swim test, I kept recalling Chris Carmichael (Lance's coach) from a bike training video I have saying, "Go all out. Don't hold anything back." Lather, Rinse, Repeat until the test was over.
Sometimes I'll come up with a little saying that I can pump my arms to. "I think I can. I think I can." Anything like that that will get you pumped and in a rhythm will help.

I think you messed up your mantra here...I believe you say "who am I? Mike Trevor. What am I? I'm a runner!!!" I say it too! I don't change the name I still say it with Mike's name in it

I have trouble with the middle ones also.....I just try to hang on telling myself that it's better to complete the workout than push this and be done......4 or 5th repeat is always my slowest

I've been working on my runs at the 3/4 portion of them. In the past, that's where I've mini-bonked in races, so when I hit that part in my runs (regular and speedwork) I really kick it in.
i think it's helped a bunch with my times...

The faster you move your arms through their range of motion, the faster your legs will go. Move your arms, your legs will follow.
Me? I normally start singing James Brown's I Feel Good.

I start picking out little markers about 20-30 yards ahead of me, and start saying "ok, make it to that piece of paper, ok..make it to the end of the fence..ok, make the turn..etc..." and I try to think about not puking (seriously).

Focus on the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, then almost done to recovery and rest points. I know when I am that dreading the last interval, I have had a good work out and really look forward to the rest that will come very soon.

I do this at the track too. Like tonight, I was doing a tempo run where the objective was to beat the last mile by at least 10 seconds. Each mile just seemed to go by quickly (not that I was fast) because I was concentrating on the time it took to complete each lap. I think this is really helping me control pacing. Something I was horrible at before speedwork. Also, it's improving my breathing.
