Posted: 04/26/06 - 17:24 Post subject: when 3rd parties butt into a sale...
or how some assclown ruined someone elses trip to vegas.
so last night i'm at work, i'm trying to help this guy pick out a pair of shoes. he says he's going to vegas and will be doing lots of walking. he's looking for a cross trainer.
i explain to him that a cross trainer might suffice, but he'd probably be better off with a quality runner, as they tend to have more cushioning.
all is well at this point. i have a starting point where i get them to try a few different pairs on to check out how they'll fit on the foot, what type of cushion they are looking for, and how they react to the price range... all i know is i'm working on less then $100. no worries, i have a doozey for just the ocassion.
he's tried a reebok walker (dmx max), but didn't like the all black.
he puts on my favorite shoe (in terms of dollar value) - the Saucony Acen. a nice white and blue shoe, light, great cushioning, $89. in the range. and he's floored by it.
it's all good right?
wrong. enter the '3rd party' that he just met like 10 minutes ago next door.
3rd party guy starts harping about how vegas *really* should try on these converse that he owned (that were on clearance, and hardly any store has left). he tells vegas "no man get him (me) to check the other stores, they'll bring them in. the shoes are great".
what the heck. so i can't just say "no that's the worst idea ever, that shoe sucks, i know, i tried it on". and i'm off to check the computer... it takes some time, but i safely determine there are none in the city (or province for that matter)
in the meantime this dude is getting him to look at all these other random shoes that don't even compare to the Acen. i overhear 3rd party say something like "i owned a pair of those before and whisper whisper". wtf mate.
but the wife is on my side... she says if the acens are good, then do it.
the husband wavers. he wants to think about it. on a whim he tries another pair... and i get him talking about the sauconys again.
he loves them, they are light, they in his range, color, comfort, everything (the key being to get him to acknowledge that). and i tell him that i make a point of trying the shoes on for myself, as a runner i need to know what works, that i stood on them for 8 hrs, loved them and he would too. we've talked for a good 15 minutes, how my girlfriend is in vegas right now, and they'll have a great time and everything, how i suffered in disney world because i had the wrong shoes on, and there is absolutely no reason for resistance...
he can't do it. for whatever reason this guy won't pull the trigger, and says he'll come back (which doesn't happen 9 out of 10 times). and then he's gone...
3rd party guy meanwhile hasn't done much of anything except talk to me and this other guy... his wife and kid had a whole bunch of stuff to buy, and then, they decided not to get anything and left.
so, no sale on either front, and the guy going to vegas is going to end up with some crappy shoes and sore feet because some moron couldn't keep his mouth shut.
*sigh* i wanted to smack that guy.
/just felt like sharing.
