interval training? I've been trying to think of it for days, but my brain just isn't working.

nope. it's exactly the same thing as intervals, but when I first started working out I had found it called something else. My aging mind isn't letting that word come back to me.

that's not what I was thinking of. the word is used for other activities, not just running. it usually goes 3 min warmup, 30 sec all out effort, 1 min slower, repeat for about 5-8 minutes, cool down for 3 min. It's driving me crazy that I can't think of, or even find this word.

the thing that's killin me is that I used to do it on my stationary bike. I think the term was used more by weightlifters to indicate that kind of intense aerobic activity.

Lots of bodybuilders swear by HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), but that's got "interval" in it, so I don't think that's what you're looking for.

Wow, glad that got cleared up by the time I got to the end of reading these. My brain was starting to hurt thinking of all the possible words.
