Posted: 07/26/06 - 09:25 Post subject: well, this explains the cops on the path this morning
there were three policemen on motorcyles on the path this morning during my run. i thought it was kind of weird, then i got home and read this:
from the AJC:
| Quote: | Searchers are combing the Silver Comet biking trail in Cobb County today for a missing Sandy Springs woman last seen Monday afternoon.
Jennifer Ewing, 54, left from home in a Honda minivan with her red bike around 2 p.m. to ride the trail. She makes the outing on the 50-mile wooded path through Cobb and Paulding Counties about four days a week, said Smyrna police Sgt. Robert Harvey.
"Her family members said she should have returned by 6:30 p.m. Monday and were concerned," Harvey said. Her silver minivan was found Monday night near the head of the trail off Cooper Lake Road in Smyrna sometime after 8 p.m., he said.
"The vehicle is being processed, but it looked to be in order," said Harvey. The missing woman, described as 5-feet 6 inches tall, 120 pounds, with dark, curly shoulder length hair and green eyes, was riding an expensive Cannondale trail bike, "that enthusiasts will spend a lot of money for — as much as $500 to $3,000."
She is believed to be wearing black bicycle shoes, black spandex biking shorts and a black helmet.
"She had no problems or difficulties that we can find, and everything seemed to be okay with her personal life. We're optimistic and see no indications of foul play at this point," Harvey said. "The trail goes through some extremely rough terrain, with lots of ravines and valleys. It could be she fell into a ravine and was injured."
A search for Ewing by family, friends and law enforcement resumed around 7 a.m. today at the trail's head, Harvey said. |

Some of the trails I run today I used to run 30 years ago also. Back then a local couple disappeared and were found shot to death along the trail I had run the day before. Drug dealing gone bad in our little hamlet. Dude was tried but never convicted he though the entire town knew he did it.

It's really a shame that our trail systems have become tainted like this. A few years ago a woman was murdered on a popular trail here, and he's just coming to trial now (it took nearly 2 years to find him).
I run on the trails around here all the time, and I'm always aware of who's around me and where I am. I just hope that's enough to keep me safe.

It's all over-sensationalized. If maybe once a decade, someone disappears off your area trail, it's front page news. But there's two people murdered in Chicago every day and nobody is blinking about walking or running through Grant Park.
I'd say statistically, you've got to be safer on a trail, bike path or tow road versus the warzone of city streets in the urban sprawl.

Especially here in Philly. Man the killings are out of control here of late.

I think it was Bill Bryson who made the following comment regarding the Appalachian Trail and its 7 murders. Not an exact quote, but to the point of "if you were to draw ANY 2100 mile long route across the US, it would cross at least 7 murder sites." Very true I think.
