I think we've covered this before, but here's a new angle. So of the 6 weddings I've been invited to for the month of November (seriously, I think they hand out my name at the registry counter "Invite her! She's a schmuck for courtesy and will definitely send a gift...") all gifts were out except one. She wasn't on weddingchannel.com so I checked Target and found her there. The wedding is in Jacksonville, FL so I have to ship it. Well, most items were gone on her registry except for her towels and I think a set of towels is nice so I select that and go to have it gift wrapped only to find they will only gift wrap each washcloth etc individually and charge you for each one. My gift wrapping was about as much as the gift So I got frustrated and picked out my own gift from Crate and Barrel and shipped it. They are getting a 3 piece non stick bakeware set that I would love to have. Is that bad? How do brides feel about getting gifts NOT on their registry? This is a funny questino because I used to dislike the registry idea, but now that I've been close friends with several brides I see how nice it really is. What do you think?

What if all the gifts on the registry were gone? Does that mean you're not obliged to get a gift for the couple?

Get something they'll need or like, and sleep sound. You did OK.

Agreed. Sometimes I don't get anything off a registry, it just depends on the situation, what's left (and cost), etc. I think what you got is a great gift, registry or not. As long as it's not something weird that they didn't register for, I think it's ok. For instance, we got a pair of carved wooden elephants that weren't on our registry....what the heck were we supposed to do with those? As opposed to a nice vase not on our registry we got that was have enjoyed having over the years.

Um...
Nambe' silver dish...thank you Uncle Ron. I love it and it's such a nice piece to use on a nice table.

Bride & Groom Lladro...thank you Mr. & Mrs. Ramby. It's beautiful and on a special shelf that we see every day.

First Xmas Ornaments...Uncle Ethan & Aunt Diane; The Elsman Family. You know, receiving them in August was just fine. I loved my first Xmas tree and how they looked.

Framed Wedding Announcement...thank you cousin Carol Ann. It's beautiful and your time/effort is special.

So...something off the list? Those things all were. OK in my book.

Hmm...who gave me those towels anyway? I can't remember.

PS I gave my friends an angel for their Xmas tree. Way off the list! They still tell me in every Xmas card how they love it!

nolefan, those are all GREAT suggestions!!!! I'll have to keep those in mind for future weddings. I'd forgotten someone did that for us with our invite and it's beautiful and hanging on the wall next to a wedding photo. The other ideas are great, too. thumbs up

I got my best friend a Waterford vase not on their registry from the Waterford factory while on my trip to Ireland and took lots of pictures of the factory and me picking it out, then made a little book of the experience of getting the vase (actually there's a long funny story involved in buying it) and I know she loves it, she's got the vase on this lit display, as though its the holy grail, and she's shown half the free world my hokey little book that I intended for her and husband to look at laugh and throw out.

Okay, point taken. I'm just not that close to this girl and didn't want this to be Uncle Larry's white elephant gift or whatever.

Be different and get a gift the husband can use. Something cordless and preferable >12V of power. You can never go wrong with tools. And if he's already got one of that tool, who cares? Guys don't mind having duplicate tools.

No doubt Cappy... where's the equality in wedding gifts!!! My wife and I registered at a local home/hardware/everything store. And I ended up with only one tool from the massive hardware list Wink
You wanna get in good graces with the hubby.. get over to Home Depot!!!

See? I knew that would happen if I used Stimpy (or is that Ren) for an avatar. Mad

Off to choose something else...

People have forgotten that a registry is a wish list, a guide for prospective gift givers, of what the couple would like to have. Anybody who assumes they will get everything on the list is an idiot (though I got almost everything - weird). Plain and simple: if it comes off the list or not, as long as it's useful, thoughtful, or both and it doesn't suck (aka those elephants) it's a good gift. Some of my most favorite items were "off the list" that people picked up because "OOOH! elkid/the 'medic will really like this!"

If it's someone you're not particularly close to, so long as it's nice they can't complain. Particularly because someone from FL who invites a Tex-assian doesn't realistically expect that individual not related to them to come, right?

BTW, I too would've kept that book. What a thoughtful gesture. You rock.
