My Mother on my Aunt's 40th did the following
BIG number 40 on the lawn, basically each numeral was from 1/2 of plywood.
notices posted in the neighborhood.
met my uncle at the train stop and filled her car with the "Over the Hill" balloons.
so ya see, it can get worse. 
wont discuss how i got my mother back.
