Posted: 10/21/02 - 20:40 Post subject: Yes, for the last time, I am GOING to DC
Rant
I leave wednesday to go to DC for the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday. You would think, by the way some people in my life are treating me, that I am going to meet with certain doom.
Now, I don't expect my non-runner friends to understand about my running. I don't discuss my running with them, frankly, because it is beyond their ability to understand. They have no frame of reference, as non-runners, and I respect that.
But I have been busting my butt since June--and I mean training hard. No one, with or without a rifle, is going to stop me from running this race. Every one needs to assess their own risk tolerance and plan their life accordingly--but I consider my risk of being shot while in DC as remote as being struck by lightening. I consider the plane flight risker than being a sniper's victim. I am just tired of the reaction I am getting from some people when they find I am not changing a single plan.

Edited to say it is some of real life friends that are concerned, not anyone here.

I was in DC last tuesday and wednesday for work - besides walking around town and at night in Rossyln, Va. - i ran along capital hill, through the national mall and along the C & O canal - i encountered a ton of people out, going about their lives.
Also, the army 10 mile race was this past sunday (the 20th) - no problems reported
Have a great race Alan and a great time in DC - it's a great city!!

Alan, Rock the face off those 26.2 miles! You've got the right attitude.. between lightening, gangs, postal workers, drunk drivers, and intern love crazed politicians, your odds of not coming back don't change much with a sniper in the mix. Be subtle on the bob & weave or you'll end up in the med tent.

I will probably bob and weave the final miles without even trying! People will think I am just being careful and not trying to run on blownout legs
