Posted: 09/15/06 - 13:13 Post subject: Looking for a World Class Marathon Runner for $$$
I am looking for a world class runner to compete in a marathon in November, 2006. This should be someone capable of a 2:20 (or better) marathon on a pretty hilly course. This would be as part of a triathlon relay. We already have a swimmer who is a 5 time US National Champion in open water swimming and a tentative cyclist. Room and board would be paid for the trip and the event offers substantial prize money. Is anyone here interested? If not, does anyone know of other runners who might be interested? If so, please respond to this post, or send me an email at jkenny5150@gmail.com.
Thanks,
-JK

there's only one internet site I've ever been to where 2:20 marathoners go online.. www.letsrun.com and you'll be hard pressed to get anyone to take you seriously. Your best bet is to go through elite runners' agents. And I seriously doubt anyway, you'll get a sub-2:20 marathoner to toss one his 2 or 3 marathons a year on a relay unless you're entering one that has some serious payday attached. I can't say I've read of any current sub-2:20 marathoners that run them "for fun". That's olympic trial material in case you don't realize. Anyone capable of running those kind of times would be thinking about peaking for the trials next year, not a triathlon two months from now.

I have to agree with jrjo. You might have to "settle" for 2:30 guys and the only 2:30 guys I know are getting ready for Chicago in hopes that a fast field, flat course will drag them along.
Your probably better off getting a pro triathlete that wouldn't mind getting in a good run before Kona

Yes, there is a serious payday. $100K for the winning team. I understand that that isn't enough to get the elite guys that run 2:10 and faster (they'll probably make more running NYC), but it should attract guys in the 2:15-2:20 range at least.

Okay.. out with it, what Ironman triathlon offers $100,000 to the winning relay team? I just googled up the Ironman Championships in Kona and the top male and female get $100,000 prize each, so I can't imagine another race having as big a purse as theirs. Whazzup?

I ran the Ottawa Marathon this spring and the list of men running that range is huge. The problem is that they are Kenyan, Ethopian and they want appearance fees, a ticket to dance, room and board, prize money, and incentive money if their time is awesome. The first guy (that actually didn't get an official time, because he cut the course) came away with $37K. I really don't see you getting a 2:15 guy without some $$ upfront and a guarantee that he'll get it, whether he finishes the race or not.

How does a race that only had 169 finishers last year come up with a $100,000 purse?

It will be much bigger than last year. I already have seen reports of several quality teams put together with marathoners in the 2:10-2:20 range.

Nevada Silverman Triathlon Announces First Professional Relay Team

High Profile US Relay Team Signs up for Nevada Silverman
HENDERSON , Nev. - August 29, 2006 - Frank Lowery, of Lowery's Multisport Races along with the City of Henderson, announced today that the first professional relay team has registered for the Nevada Silverman Triathlon. The three man U.S.-based team will consist of Chris Lieto, Jamie Patrick and Brian Astell. All three athletes are previous triathlon top finishers.
The Silverman is offering a $100,000.00 prize purse to the first combination relay team that can break the 8-hour mark on the course. The Nevada Silverman is a full-distance triathlon consisting of a 2.4-mile swim; 112-mile bike and 26.2 mile run held annually in Henderson , Nevada .
Possibly the most high profile of the trio is Chris Lieto, in 2003 Inside Triathlon Magazine ranked Lieto 5th in the world in cycling. He has broken numerous course records in Ironman races across the world and just recently won Ironman Canada 2005 and Ironman Japan 2006. Jamie Patrick will be completing the swim portion of the race, Patrick has competed in 15 Ironman races in his career and has finished 1st place in the swim portion on four of those. Brian Astell will be completing the run portion of the race; he is a previous top ten finisher in two Xterra Championships.
"We are excited to see such high profile athletes as Chris Lieto and his team signing up for the race, they are the first combination relay team to sign up for the race with dreams of taking home $100,000.00. The pressure is really on for other professional teams to sign up to challenge these guys," said Lowery. "We are waiting to see who the next team will be."
Beating the 8-hour mark has always been the ultimate goal in the sport of triathlon. Although it has been achieved in the past, 8 hours still maintains its allure as "the time to beat" and has never before been offered up as a challenge for any relay team. Teams can consist of any combination of professional or amateur athletes willing to take the challenge.
The Nevada Silverman Triathlon will initiate in-competition drug testing at the 2006 Event. All participants will be subject to testing which will be conducted in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agencies International Standards for Doping Control. The specific details of the testing program will be announced to all participants prior to the event.
The Silverman Triathlon is a full-distance triathlon held in Henderson , Nevada .
Branded as the toughest course in North America by "The Man" himself, Dave Scott, and echoed by the 244 finishers from 2005, the Nevada Silverman is sure to attract individuals and relay teams from around the world in 2006. This years' event, sponsored by Centra, the City of Henderson , Interstate Plumbing and Storage One, will take place Sunday, November 12, 2006. For registration or more information on the Nevada Silverman Full Distance Triathlon please visit www.silvermannv.com.
I'm going with......this team will be beat. I'm having a hard time believing that Lieto was ranked 5th in the world. 5th amongst triathletes...maybe. After reading this article, I can see why you would seek people that are the best in one event and combine them. If their swimmer was the "best" he'd have finished 1st 15 for 15 of those ironman out of the swim.

I think it's a complaint about the World Triathlon Corporation which owns the rights to the "Ironman" name when it comes to triathlon. Full Distance, or Iron-Distance (though I've heard the WTC has fought againt other organizations using "Iron-Distance" because it will still associate and confuse the race with a sponsored Ironman event) are the terms most commonly used descriptions for the race if not sponsored by WTC.
