Hi,
I am a newbie here - ok I have lurked for awhile and I refuse
to say how many tvs are in our house. Surprised
Anyway my questions are
What kind of training program do you follow to build up mileage.
I have been running since June I average about 25mpw.
There is a 1/2 marathon on 3/15 and one on 4/26 I would like to
do and my ultimate goal is Chicago next year. I know there are
several training programs out there, however, they all build up to
the race day what kind of schedule do I use between now and
the race training schedules. I hope this makes sense.

thank you

It is best to increase your mileage by at most 10% per week

Just keep what you are doing, as long as you have a good base and miles in the bank, when the time comes were you want to get on a schedule, you can get on the appropriate program for your level.

You can send me a private message about how many TV's you have, I won't tell. Wink

Ditto on all of what monk said. Just steadily build up your base mileage until you're at a comfortable level and then start to work on speed until the appropriate time to start your training schedule.

Building a base is most imporant like monk said increase by no more than 10% a week should be fine. I followed an 18 week program and it worked very well for me. If possible try getting in a couple of races at shorter distances to test out your fitness ability. Good luck

I agree with the boys on building up the base mileage.
Most marathon and half-marathon programs use an 18-week program, so that gives you a month between now and the start of a program for the first half. Of course, most programs use the first half of their program as mileage building anyway, so you're good to go on that.
Hal Higdon has a good program for marathon beginners that you could adapt for a half. I use my own program, and would be happy to share some ideas with you if you want.

BTW, good to see that you've decided to join us Very Happy

thank you for all your responses.
I have run some shorter distance races. Saturday I ran my
first 5k. My time was 26:59. My goal was under 30 so
I was pleased. The Oktoberfest beer at the end was pretty good, too.

Congrats on the time! Nothing like beating your goal by 3+ minutes! Good beer at the end always makes me run faster... Wink
