Have any of you taken a self defense class? If so, was it purely assault prevention, or a martial art type? I had a bit of a scare on Tuesday night and am looking to take a class so I can use my muscles plus a disabling/escapist technique.

I take martial arts classes. I took Tae Kwon Do for a while, and now started at a new school, learning a mixture of martial arts, including Tae Kwon Do, Kenpo, and Kung Fu techniques. I started taking it because I wanted to know some basic self-defense moves, but I love it! It's overtaking my love for running right now. The confidence it builds is amazing.
If you want to just learn some basic self-defense techniques, there are community classes you can take. You can learn enough in one or two sessions (and then practice a little bit) to be able to at least scare the crap out of any wannabe attackers.

I took a self-defense class in college that was purely self-defense techniques (how to protect yourself, disbale an attacker). I also have had some kick-boxing. Thankfully I haven't had to use any techniques learned, but I am glad I took the classes.

Haven't done it, but want to. I don't think my Tae Bo'ing qualifies.
I want to get the kids into this as well. I totally missed the opportunity recetnly, they're having SD classes for 5-15 yo's at the Y, totally economical. Hoping they do that again soon.
I think Tae Kwon Do would be a good bet.

I take Tae Kwon Do. I do it more for a sport than for self defense, though.

I wanted to add...
Many TKD studios offer a form of self-defense but it is very minimal at the beginning. If you are specifically looking for a way to protect yourself I think you would be better off taking a Hapkido class or a self-defense class.

I took a one-time class that I thought was helpful. It was local, I can give you more specifics when I see you.

Say Kid,
So you're looking for a high-quality non-credit personal enrichment type of course? Right here in the Delaware Valley?!
I hear great things about the Institute for Continuing Studies at Temple University Center City. Located right across from City Hall and convenient to public transportation and discounted parking!!!!!
I even know who to contact to get a catalog. Gosh, I just love mine. Everyone should have an ICS catalog!!
--End shameless plug--
um, sorry, no self defense courses this semester
