I just talked to the garage about MY car: $88.00 repair bill. could have been worse, and I'm not sure that it's totally taken care of, but if it makes it home, and gives us another month or 2 of service I'll be happy. Now to take care of my wife's car.

Cripes I didn't know you could get a car even looked at let alone fixed for under a hundred bucks these days. what was the problem?

Gosh, that's not much at all. Lucky you! We had the option of having the rotars and brakes done at a shop for $2,546 (and our car is way past its warranty). Instead, my dh bought a repair manual and the parts himself and did all four for $345. We took the Bimmer in for the same treatment at the dealership and it cost over 5k but it was 100% covered under the insurance.

$2,546 for a complete brake job? Were all the parts made of titanium and plated in gold?

I saw at the dealership for Robin's van the labor rate was 75.00 and hour

2 hoses blown. Very low tranny fluid too. The thing that bugs me is that no one has gotten to the real cause of the overheating, but if I get the car home, I may be able to look at that myself. For some reason I recall buying a thermostat and installing it, but it's been about 10 years agon on another car.

I have no idea. They even charged us $255 just to look at the car. bastage!

No, that also included the "tools" to do the job. The bolts on the rotars were so rusted that my dh had to buy a blowtorch to loosen them. He also bought one of those nifty hydraulic lifts from Walmart.

Overheating causes:
Smell antifreeze? If yes then:
leaking hoses (sounds like that is fixed)
loose hose clamps
bad water pump
bad radiator (rotted away, pinholes)
bad radiator cap
bad heater coil (strong antifreeze odor inside of vehicle)
bad freeze plug(s)
If you don't smell antifreeze and it's overheating:
bad thermostat
bad head gasket (look for signs of antifreeze or water in oil, oil on dipstick would be milky looking or have consistency of lithium grease)
warped head causing improper sealing between head and block (big bucks to fix this)
Any decent repair shop should be able to pressure test the system to determine if there are leaks anywhere.
