The cheer "Hip, hip, hooray" is derived from the first Holy Crusade that conquered Jerusalem. As the Crusaders attacked the city and the Muslims and Jews inside, they would shout "Hep, hep" , which is an acronym for the Latin for "Jerusalem has fallen". To this day, Jewish people do not use this cheer.

30% of Europe's Jewish population was killed by the Crusaders en route to the Holy Land. The Jerusalem Jews were burned alive inside their temple when the city fell to the Crusaders.

More useless trivia.

Prior to the arrival of the Crusaders, Muslim, Jew and Christian all lived in harmony. Certain places of worship were shared by all three faiths.

When the Crusaders captured Jerusalem they killed just about anyone in the city, including the Christians living there. Some accounts say the streets ran with blood.

When the Crusaders were ousted out of Jerusalem by Suleman the Magnificent, they were spared being massacred by Suleman. As was the custom, he imposed a ransom on the captives. He paid the ransom for the poorer of the captives. (Ransoms were imposed so the ordinary soldiers could get a bonus on their wages)

You may be right - I probably mixed them up. One of them did the conquering of the Arab world the other did the Jerusalem thing. Not an expert on this particular genre of history. Gyst of the story is pretty factual. Other factoids: The Crusaders used the Temple of the Mount (Yes the same one from today) as a stable. Richard the Lionheart (yea the Robin Hood one) was one of the worst offenders in the "show no mercy to the heathens" department.
