Early Sunday morning I took my stepson to the local mall to teach him how to drive my 5 speed. While we are there security is continuously circling the mall. At one point I could see this huge grin on his face. After watching us bunny hop through the parking lot, stall out, grind gears, curse, etc, etc he ends up right behind us at a stop sign. teehee My stepson had actually started to get the hang of it, however, he was quite nervous with the security guy right behind him. After stalling the car several times the security guard gets out of his vehicle and walks over and tells my stepson "not to be nervous, don't worry if people are behind you, or if they honk, try to just relax and you will be just fine." then he
walks back to his vehicle and after a few more times my stepson is finally able to get the car going.

I was trying to teach my wife how to drive a stick, as there are no malls in that town (or large parking lots) we hit the back streets. After about an 45 minutes of whiplash she was getting the hang of it. So we are cruising a long and this young kid on a 4 wheeler comes flying up the street but on the wrong side (i.e. our side) My wife is getting nervous but not slowing down. we are in a game of chicken and I don't think either party was going to give, so here I am yelling BRAKE, BRAKE!!!! but since she doesn't understand English she had no idea what I was yelling. ah, good times.

Dave tried to teach me once.... he went to the Jeep dealership and told them he was interested in buying a new wrangler... kept it for 24 hours and took it back....

It was him, not me.

So I should update my formula to:

New driver + 5 speed + language barrier = soiled shorts?

Embarassed I was about to pull the hand brake until I remembered the word I wanted in Spanish. (FYI Frena! is the phrase one may need in this situation)

Frena is not the spanish translation to:"Holy sh*t we're all gonna die"

Cool mall cop, Poky!! That was a way cool thing to do.

I learned how to drive stick when I bought a stick shift to replace my car that had just been totaled--and drove it back to college from Houston to Lubbock. Nothing like a brazillion miles to teach you something.

how about an old driver + new to 5 speed = ?

thinking my next purchase may be a 5 speed. I've only ever driven around the block 3 times in my friend's 1983 sentra with a bad clutch. I didn't kill it and it was even a hilly block. But thats all I've ever done.

two points for even trying to teach him the stick.

I taught myself at 28 by reading something online. I drove it for 5 years with no problems but in the end went back to an automatic. Too many long hours stuck in traffic and getting resentful of the thing. It was definitely fun at times...but in the end not worth it to me. You can definitely learn though...I did. Maybe if I had always driven one I wouldn't feel like it was just extra work in traffic.

That's great. Mr. Green I never learned to drive a stick really. But one night when I was prolly 17 DH and I were out and he drank way to much so I had to drive. I drove his 1968 GTO home. It was a 4-speed. I never stalled it once but the garage was at the top of a hill. I gunned it up the hill and hit the break just as the front bumper hit the garage door! Shocked It stalled right there. Cool
