I was thinking about volunteering at a tri before I race my first just to see how it all works. Now, since I have ZERO experience, would I be in the way or is there work for totally unskilled labor? I would like to see the trasition areas particularly up close before my first race.

Volunteers are what make the race.
Can you fill a cup of water? You can volunteer to hand out drinks.
Can you write? You can be a body-marker.
There is no shortage of stuff you can do, even if you don't have "experience".
Hell, even if you don't volunteer, just go out and spectate. You'll still learn a lot.

Have you met me?
I think I will stop by Fresh Air and see what's happening before my July 10 race. I want to contribute something to the triathlon community since I am going to be a part of it.

Volunteer is great. Hard work by rewarding. It is good to give back to your sport.
You almost never have enough volunteers. Aid stations, marshels, chip collecters, setup, breakdown, trash, etc.

Absolutely 1000% go volunteer and help out! You'll have a great time, meet neat people, and get the FEVER! Yes! Go!

If you volunteer you can do anything. At the start like MB said or out on the course directing at turns. Volunteers never get in the way. (Once my hubby volunteered at a race, they were desperate. He was placed in a canoe in the middle of the swim. Thank goodness noone needed his assistance, he can't swim very well.)
