We got some nasty weather around six pm yesterday. It was supposed to stay south of us, but didn't. A large tree along our street (about 100 yards in a straight line from our house) lost a large branch which blocked part of the road. I was thinking the wind, but we had a lot of lightning as well, and that's what LC thought happened.

yep... they seem to hit around here this time of year. I think we had some mini ones Thursday night running trail. No, they were not confirmed, but the damage suggests they happened.

We lost power for 13-hours yesterday after some big winds knocked down some big timber around Wobegon. I moved 3 trees from across the road myself this morning when out walking the dog.

Straight line winds with huge gusts can cause tornado type damage as well.
Sue, it's usually not the heat wave that causes the tornado, it's the cold front that comes in behind it. You can usually spot a pretty sudden 10-20 degree drop in temp in about an hour.
