Posted: 07/30/05 - 13:51 Post subject: today's odd running experience
warning: it's gross too
i went out to run this morning and not even out of my first mile, i inhaled and thwack - a japanese beetle goes in and sticks itself on the back of my throat. i stopped, realized what it was, and started, um, gagging to get it out. he was hanging on for dear life. poof - out it comes.
it still feels very weird "back there" swelling, burning like a sore throat and feels like there's still something stuck there...
i wind up in the ER with the ER doctor trying unsucessfully to get this "thing" out of my throat -- the way back of my soft palate (new word for me). he calls the ENT surgeon who takes forever to get down to see me. i get an IV to sedate me and calm the gag reflex which, by the way, gets really sensitive when there's a portion of a japanese beetle lodged in your throat.
surgeon guy comes in, i tell him i think i have a beetle leg stuck in my throat. he puts on his fiber-optic miner's light, pulls out a long forceps type thing and gets it out after a few tries, no problems from me at this point. he was my hero even though it took him an hour to come down
yes, it's a beetle leg and he puts it in a take-home jar for me. he was a cyclist and told stories of bees hitting his face on the downhill...and stuff. seeing as i was the only non heart-attack symptom person in that ER, i was the talk of the room. don't go home yet we wanna see the leg.
oh, and i'm a jogger who looks to be about 40
isn't that weird?

What were you doing jogging with your mouth wide open??!!
Great! Now sedentary people worldwide are going to be using this as an excuse not to exercise!

I get hit in the face by bugs all the time while I'm riding. I don't ride around with my mouth open though.

I'm sorry you wound up in the ER over it but what a hellafubby retelling of it all....
I swallowed a bug (much smaller than a japenese beetle) while running just the other day. Its pretty normal for me and cycling but it was a new experience for me with running. /just call me a mouth breather

That is fully nasty. I swallow bugs all the time, but they're tiny little things and go down like candy.
