2nd grader comes into my room today, and music class is just before their lunch so they have lunchboxes and money with them. The rules are "Put it under your seat" 5 minutes into class, one boy raises his hand to say that his dollar is missing.

me: did you put it under your seat?
defective 2nd grader: yes, and now it's gone
me: I don't remember seeing it under your seat. check your pockets.
defective 2nd grader: I never put it in my pockets.
me: look anyway.

dollar not there, and I say again to him that I really think he left it in his classroom.....he says that he didn't.

fast forward into class: the kid comes back up to me to tell me that he left his dollar in the classroom! at the end of class, I send him back to get it, and when he returns (giggling) he says that he found it in his desk!

did this kid learn anything in music today? probably not, because he was too worried about his "stolen" dollar that wasn't stolen, he was just too scatter-brained to keep track of it.

I hate it when someone steals my money. I can't think straight! Luckily, it's always me who stole it in the end.

You teachers have my respect though...for putting up with kids like that day after day, and parents like me who may expect too much out of teachers, and am not afraid to voice it. I can't imagine being patient day after day with that amount of kids!

lesson learned for me: this kid was convinced that he was absolutely right. how often are we convinced of the same thing, that we couldn't possibly be wrong???? I've learned that I need to consider all of the options before settling on the "right" answer. Now it's not because of this kid, but the situation brought that to mind. He was just so sure that someone had stolen his dollar, and had to take a few minutes to consider that he could be wrong (that was the big surprise to him) and then think of the other options.
