This is about 4km from my house as the crow flies and within spitting distance of the house I grew up in. You can see downtown Kelowna in the background.

my friend who lives in Kelowna sells parts to the logging industry and will likely remove those trees very soon.

Your friend must be very very busy right now. It's about time the loggers around here started making some money.
BC used to be very anti-logging. After last year's fires we are more of the 'pave it and paint it green' camp.

Judging by the diameter of the trees in the photo that area has already been logged in past 10 or so years.

Actually it's provincial park and the area has never been logged. Those trees used to be 50-60 feet tall, some of them. It's the result of an effect called 'candling' where just the tops of the trees catch fire and burn off first. Forest fires that are burning very hot and fast tend to do it. It looks like lava moving down a mountain.
