I never felt anyone was being judged, really, I just wanted to give a perspective on why some people allow themselves to gain weight--not an excuse, because we all have the ability to change our lives. (Many people fail to realize they have a problem) Truthfully--this is the first place I haven't felt judged. I don't run fast. I certainly don't have a runner's body. I'm only a brand-new athlete, but I have only received acceptance and friendship here. That's why this is my favorite place, because those of you who have become my friends don't judge me by my performance or how I look, but because I'm me.

I felt Keltic was just concerned. I notice obesity everywhere, too--and it just saddens. I also don't feel we're talking about people who have hit a "middle-age" spread or don't fit Hollywood's opinion of "fit". I think we are talking about those people who are dangerously overweight.

And I don't think that just talking about it is passing judgment, I think it is merely discussing a health issue.

But when you see an overweight person, how do you know who fits into that category and who doesn't? I think the tendency BY SOCIETY IN GENERAL is to assume they fall into the fat due to their own laziness category unless proven otherwise.

I've explained a little in other threads, that I am the kind of person who is willing to change the world, and having a hard time accepting that the only one I can change is myself. Before I found myself in the ED, I noticed every obese person within my range of sight. When I slipped into it, I noticed only myself. I think what I saw on saturday was an indication that I am getting better, and for the first time in months I saw that we, as a culture, have a tendency to be overweight For Whatever Reason. A woman I work with, and trust, is overweight, and often discusses it with me. I've told her about my problem. We agree that the problems are similar, eating too much is just like not eating enough. She confesses to eating because she is stressed. I confess to restricting my food when I am stressed. Both are inappropriate behaviors. Once again, this evening I encountered an overweight person. This thread flashed through my mind, and my thought was "what are her issues?" not how lazy she is. The fact remains that we are a nation that is becoming Super-Sized and the implications are dangerous. My thread about the EMT's was more about the irony than any judgment about their size.

My intention was not to cause an argument here, although it has certainly brought about some good discussion. And it wasn't to judge the obese as lazy. It was to point out that we are overweight, as a nation, and that there will be an increase in certain health problems because of it. Those health problems could be prevented, IF we act on it now.

1. I don't think anyone is arguing. I think we've had a very civil, thought-provoking discussion and a variety of opinions and experiences have been expressed .

2. The only person who looks a little shady in all of this is Poky, what with her refusal to go OVER!

Yeah, I would agree with that. There was a locked thread a while back at CR in Basic Training where some punk a-hole was beeoytching about this "fat chick" at the gym that was hogging the treadmill he wanted to run on "and going really slow, like what bother, it's not like she was really working out or anything." That pissed me off royally and we brawled for days over it, some people agreed with me and some agreed with him, which I thought sucked. At least she was trying.

I thought you were more addressing the people here who had posted comments, that's why I said what I said. I think the people here, myself included, who made any comments to the laziness effect, were ones who know someone who has 50 excuses why they can't do it, or just simply won't make the effort. But you're right, I've heard people at the gym make comments and I know people at CR in the past have posted about people yelling things at them while running when they were overweight. THAT is just wrong.

Alright Keltic...just to see if you can get 10 pages...

I remember that post at CR about the woman and the treadmill. Everyone has the right to exercise how they see fit. And I also agree about what a friendly, accepting place this is. I'm slow, I'll always be slow, but somehow, it doesn't seem to matter here. (that, or you all whisper very softly)

I'm slow too, but I appreciate the sincere encouragement I get here. No one treats me as an inferior runner because I'm relatively new at it, or because I'm not as fast as they are, or I'm not as fast as I'd like to be. this a great place to hang out.

10 pages??? think it will flip over tonight?
