We bought a top of the line DVD player because we are home theatre freaks but it won't play a disc if it has so much as a finger smudge on it. I talked to the guy at BLockbuster and he said the $49 WAlMart specials will grind through anything, whereas the pricier models are way more tempermental. This seems just....wrong. Do I need to buy a cheapy player so I can show the much loved childrens' DVDs I rent every week?

Buy the cheap one. That way the little ones don't hurt/damage the nicer one.
*This from someone who almost always buys the cheaper one because she's afraid she herself will damage the nicer one.
