is going on right outside. I've been out there for the last 4 1/2 hours cheering. I'm hoarse and have given out 1/2 a bag of pretzels 1/2 dozen oranges, some water, advil and gatorade. Its a brutal day though, its easily 70-something right now and I've seen solid walkers for a while now (we're still in a range they should be running). My 4 friends who ran did awesome, but the heat makes me not sad I didn't get ready for this. Does inspire me...People are so funny, I love cheering them on. People have pretty funny comments for being so tired (I set up my personal aid station and cheering section with some neighbors at 10K, 10mile then nearly 24mile...on a hill...) when the sub 3 hour marathoners are walking, you know its hot. Really fun time though.
anyway, thats what I did this morning...

I was really lucky when I did the "Houston Tenneco" back in the 90's.....it was in the 40's, cloudy and maybe a bit drizzly......perfect weather, for me anyway......heat makes me wilt......

I did the half one year it started at 30 and got up to the 70s. I was okay, but the marathoners were hating life. There was a lot of wilting today. Its tough to cheer on wilting runners. One good thing is Houston puts the runner's name on the bibs if they registered before this week, so I could call names sometime. But its tough to be original for 4 hours. I try to avoid numbers "You only have 2.2 miles left" because some of these people seemed to struggle just to get one foot in front of the other. And I'm talking to them on a kind of harsh hill, or, harsh for Houston and on the 24th mile anyway. So I try to be encouraging, but they are going so slow you can practically have a conversation with them...I felt terrible for some. Only so many times you can say some of the same things. I did get a little bit of trash talking on my Kentucky shirt from a few people "Go runner, Great job" "Hey thanks! And Go Tarheels"

no no no, I was basically at one point where the course doubles back on itself, very near where I live, and I had all that crap for my friends. When they only took a little bit of their supplies, I started offering the rest to strangers, who were happy to take my pretzels and oranges and gatorade. So it was me and my big bag o fun in about a 2 block section, and not an official aid station.

I realized you were running your own station, but I didn't realize the course double backed on itself. Now it makes sense.
That is cool you sat out there and did that. A few people do that here in Jacksonville for the Marathon and the Gate River run. When the little kids are out there, I make sure to take a cup from them. They always seem to get a big smile out of it.

Very nice thing you did, Pfff. I'm just trying to think of the last time I saw a 'thon, not run it.
Sheesh - it was the wimmen's Olympic trials in St. Louis. Before that, was Chicago in '03. Some people know what happened there.
