If I am not mistaken, the NHL has the highest average salary per player of any sport.

Where would the team's/league get the money. Without a big TV contract there is not a lot of cash going around

That wasn't the question. Regardless of funding source, assuming there is one, should they get more, less, or the same?

I'm not arguing against you, but why do you think that? I personally think all professional athletes over paid but that's my opinion.

Yes they do, but people really don't pay attention until the playoffs start, (that is if they make it)

I live in hockey town (Toronto) and the average ticket price for a game is over $100. Now I'm you're average income earner but for me to take the family to a game, buy a few snacks and souveiners would cost me a freakin fortune. Do I have sympathy for either side? Hell no.
Substitute Pittsburgh for Toronto. I stopped going to professional sports games about five or six years ago because I decided that it wasn't worth the cost. The exception is baseball in the cheap seats (still $7 here).

I think if they don't come to an agreement soon then the same thing that happened to baseball when they went on strike will happen to hockey. It will take years to regains what little popularity it has.
I'm all for lessening it's popularity. I'd prefer to feel that I was in on something really cool that others just can't appreciate.

Well, I personally think that there is more skill both as an individual and a team required for hockey. But then again I come from a hockey family. I'm told I was going to my brother's hockey games in Canada when I was 3 weeks old.

Yeah, but they're not nearly as good as a certain team that plays at Nassau Coliseum.

Another thing to consider is the Canadian owned teams, collect C$ put have to pay their players in A$. With the exchange rate being so different its hard for some of the Canadian teams to make money

Ticket prices for the Minnesota Wild are in the $50. That's a lot of money to spend for a sport that i am only casually acquainted with because of video games.

Hockey is fun live, though.

I'll say that hockey players should NOT be paid more than football players. Reasoning: Part of this is the funding issue (and it needs to be a factor). Without the tv deal in America the money isn't there, and perhaps because of the lack of a big tv deal the players are not nearly as well known as the football players (in my opinion and in my world, i don't know the hockey players). Outside of a few superstars (Lemieux, Gretzsky), the NHL seldom has the star power that the other major sports have. The games may sell out at the arena, but if that isn't enough revenue for the team to be profitable, then something needs to be done.

The size of the contracts is one possible thing. A salary cap may be another. Contraction a third. Reducing roster size a fourth. Right or wrong, the players are going to take a hit here.

The ticket prices here in Philly are outrageous, and if they make the playoffs , the prices go up based on the round of the playoffs the team is in.

Ticket prices are way too expensive

Hockey players play more games therefore... teams have an opportunity to generate more revenue therefore... players should be paid more. (just one stream of thought)

And hey, isn't it ultimately the owners responsbility to market the league to increase traffic to the games? The players will market themselves if they are smart (being visible in the community either connected to hockey or philanthropy)- thus creating demand for themselves and hopefully driving local ticket sales up because of the personality factor in addition to whatever skills they bring to the team.

The main reason tickets are so expensive is that the NHL is the only major sports league that doesn't enjoy a large national TV contract. I think under the last go-around, the NHL was paying ABC to broadcast playoff and Stanley Cup games. Could you imagine if the NFL had to pay ABC, NBC, Fox to put the Super Bowl on the tube?

The ratings are absolutely dreadful nationally for NHL hockey. It is still a very specific, regional sport which doesn't translate well to TV. (It's much better live.) Very few teams enjoy decent local TV/radio deals, therefore revenue streams for NHL teams are much lower then the other major sports.

P.S. NHL players are only entitled to earn a portion of the revenues they earn. The NFL makes ALOT more money then the NHL, therefore NHL players shouldn't make more then the NFL players.
