Posted: 07/10/03 - 09:38 Post subject: the Kobe Bryant situation
Here's the latest:
Seems a cab driver reports picking up Kobe and 3 bodyguards at the hospital the night of the alleged sexual assualt. Kobe was also accompanied by 2 deputy sheriffs. Kobe evidently put a towel over his head, and his three companions went back to the resort he was staying, got all his personal effects, and then they went to a new hotel.
The Sheriff's office confirmed the girl involved was a 19 year old employee of the resort.
Now, at first, I thought the whole thing was a hoax. Someone trying to get rich at Kobe's expense. Now, I'm getting a little different vibe.
Any one else have thoughts on this?

The more I hear, the more I am starting to believe the allegations. Everything is matching up so far...we'll see though I guess.
I honestly am really surprised to hear this about Kobe. About 1/2 of the rest of the NBA? no surprise but despite his being a Laker I kind of thought more of him....

I want to see what the DA and sheriff have to say
I am sure charges are pending based on the results of the rape kit.

see, me too!
Kobe is intelligent, thoughtful, and extremely well mannered. At least as far as anyone knows. But ....
Kobe is young, in Colorado for surgery, staying at a resort, say he has a few cocktails, a young attractive girl(I'm assuming she's attractive) flirts with him a little, (he is rich, famous, talented) he flirts back, things maybe go a little too far...
I hope not, but I guess it's not inconceivable.

I'd prefer to not believe it, but it's certainly starting to look real.I'll wait until I see evidence to go one way or another. One thing is certain, "no" means "no" no matter what the situation.

Thats my impression of him too. Really sad if this is true.
Whats even more sad is ('scuse me while I dust off and climb onto my soapbox) that we always tend to doubt the woman first. Have you ever noticed that? I have read some statistic that less than 5% of sexual assault allegations are false. And that more than 50% of all assaults that occur go completely unreported...so isn't our (myself included here) jumping to this 'she's lying'/'the allegations are false until we hear good proof' conclusion making it that much harder for those other 50% to come out? I guess our tendency to disbelieve in this situation at least has a lot to do with the stories you hear of women trying to get pregnant by these pro athletes so they can get 'a piece of the pie' financially via child support. I don't know. I hate that I'm so cynical though. I can't imagine what it would be like to be in that situation and have to come forward, ESPECIALLY if it was a well known athlete. (climbing down from soapbox)
It will be very interesting what the DA comes up with.
Hey Joe, how can they arrest him without charges? Isn't that what happened? pardon my confusion, my knowledge of this whole thing comes strictly from closed captioned sportscenter at the gym...

We talk of Kobe like he was our next door neighbor, yo. We know NOTHING about him except that he's an exceptional B-baller, he smiles alot and has never gotten in trouble. It's a role he got branded from the beginning and he's played it well.

Very good point. of course, there are several other 'ballers' who could use some PR half as good as his...

True dat. But remember he had a squeaky clean image before, and he's worth a gajillion dollars which might be an incentive to a financially strapped young maiden for exploit him. It doesn't make it right, but it helps to explain why people are so reluctant to believe he might actually be a pig.

I am trying not to believe either side till all the evidence is out. But that's hard to do.
My thinking is if I were worth what he's worth and as exposed of a person I would be so careful of all my actions. But you throw a little alcohol into a few people and things happen. We may never hear the truth.
