Most of the cell phone carriers also allow text messaging from their website. They usually have a link for it. I've answered quite a few from there.

Cingular only allows them to other Cingular numbers. My dad is on T-mobile I think.

Many times text messages are easier for communication purposes then calls - especially when you are in a noisy environment or a large public area (where getting a cell signal is tough). You avoid the entire "telephone tag/voice mail issue back and forth."
The text messages are growing on me. I just wish I could get one device that combines a quality cell phone and my Blackberry (email) that doesn't cost an arm & a leg.

Being a bit of a Luddite, I've never sent a text message intentionally. My pocket however, loves text messaging and has been responsible for a nice increase in my cel phone bills!!!!
Luckily, a colleague taught me how to lock my key pad, which seems to have put that phone-crazy pocket of mine in it's place
Edited to add: Oops! Just checked, key pad was not locked and I seem to have called Cambodia. . . again. Sorry, G3.

I have Cingular but I have text messaged through Nextel's site too. You just have to know their carrier... But not specifically have that type of phone to use the website one.
