My fancy pants bike pump with built in CO2 got its first test drive today and failed miserably. Apparently the little rod that is supposed to pierce the canister isn't long enough or sharp enough or SOMETHING because I just spent 30 minutes trying to get the damn thing to work on the side of the road, and then spent another ten pumping my arse off by hand to get enough air into the tire to get home.
Why is it that all this stuff that's supposed to make our lives easier ends up not working and causing us more stress than ever?

Hey....I got new tubes and tires this week too....didn't want to have a flat in the middle of nowhere, so I got some Specialized Armadillo tires and Airlock tubes.....a little heavy, but I'm a fat old fart, so a couple ounces doesn't matter much...... Mr. Green
I figure I'm due for a flat any time now. I have ridden through more glass lately than I care to think about.

Totally, totally jinxed myself. It was a spectacular flat though, at high speed and with lots of hissing.

I hate ask the obvious, but was the canister you were using threaded? Some canisters cannot be used with some pumps.

The canister I was using was threaded as was the pump. It's dented in the top but never got punctured. I'm being accused of being a 'girly girl' who's not strong enough to crack my CO2 now.

I've seen so many people pop their tires with the CO2 things they make me nervous (and I'm cheap). So I have a pump and never ride with out my cell phone or far from help/civilization. The only times I've ever had to fix a flat what I could pump with the hand pump was enough to get me to destination B. Maybe not at optimal speed, but the tire was inflated enough.

I tell ya, after today I'm hand pumping all the way. Life's too short to get that frustrated on the side of the road.

Who was hissing, you or the tire?

I've got one of these.
And when the needle won't puncture the CO2 cart, I just put a little rock in the bottom of the CO2 holder to make the cartridge sit a little higher.
