WI abolished the death penalty in 1853 and has the longest running prohibition of capital punishment in nation.
There was a push in the 1990s to invoke death penalty after Jeffrey Dahmer.
this case in invoking new talk:
http://www.postcrescent.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060305/APC0101/603050549/1003/APCnews
what are the chances of it passing with Jim Doyle as Governor???
hopefully Steven Avery will be taken care of like Dahmer. Wisconsin inmates are good at doing what the law won't. They'll take care of this creep.
This same creep just settled for $400k for being "wrongfully imprisioned" for rape.

I think the latest polling data shows about 70% of people in favor of the death pentalty. I say put it on ballot and let the voters decide.

I completely agree.
Some people say let them rot in jail, but the fact of the matter is that they dont' just 'rot' some people lead very productive prison lives.
for creeps like this guy though, i say let the family have at him. make him suffer like his victim. The unfortunate thing is, he'd probably enjoy the pain...

I don't support the death penalty.
Two negatives make a positive only in math class.

If Wisconsin has it together, they will resume the death penalty.
Unfortunately, Karlene, the persons who are convicted for murder (whether in for life or subsequently released) are far more likely to kill again than lead 'very productive' lives. The DP should be resumed with lethal injection not being an option. Very few of the victims escape 'cruel and unusual punishment' in the manner which they are killed - why should their killers sink into a physically pain-free eternity?
Of course, this should be done only after a through, complete trial, and reasonable length of time for appeals - Death Row people who've been there for five, ten, years or more have made the appeal process a farce.

When taking someone's life, there can be no mistakes. I have yet to see a perfect judicial system.

Like flogging, the death penalty belongs in the dark ages.

Our entire system needs an overhaul.
I am pro death penalty--but our current system is broken. One innocent being sent to death vs prison is way too many.
In the face of incontrovertible evidence or admittance of guilt, yes, the death penalty is good.
I have spoken to a prison guard from Alabama (from the 60's) and he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that some of his inmates were in there despite their complete innocence.
I don't want to be responsible for sending an innocent person to their death.

Here are the circumstances in which the death penalty would be OK with me:
1. When criminal justice is applied uniformly
2. When it becomes at least comparable in cost to housing a prisoner for the rest of his life
3. When the state can demonstrate that it's right to take a life in order to show that it's wrong to take a life.

Not trying to be nasty--serious request here. Please explain for the politically impaired (me) what the basic views are for the conservatives vs liberals vs libertarians.
It's been so long since I identified with a political party that I don't know what each believes anymore.

me too. I believe I'm considered libertarian. I think the death penalty is acceptable. I believe in this case, very acceptable---the guy brought his 16 y/o nephew into his world of torture and murder. Before the case is done, I'm sure we'll see more relatives at least bearing knowledge. I don't believe he can be rehabilitated and unless the victim's family pleads for his life, the death penalty wouldn't bother me at all.
He obvious has the ability to coerce people to commit acts that they KNOW are wrong. The boy said he could hear the young lady screaming when he picked up his uncle's mail from the mailbox. I have a hard time believing that his parents and brothers that work the salvage yard didn't hear a thing, or suspect anything, when the police were looking for her and her car was on their property.

I took the quiz and scored as I knew I would. Libertarian.
This interests me:
How People Have Scored
Centrist 30.24 %
Right (Conservative) 7.55 %
Libertarian 34.79 %
Left (Liberal) 18.79 %
Statist (Big Government) 8.63 %
I hve often said that most Republicans are truly Libertarian... this seems to reinforce that to me.
