She has good reason to be pissed she only invited that person.

So who do you think is tacky, the single person, or the bride for not wanting them to bring a guest? I know I'd be pretty ticked off if I was expected to leave my SO home when the married people got to come as couples--are they that strapped for money?

I think she should be upset as well. Obviously, money is being spent/head for each plate at the table. Not only that, but some venues and churches only have "X" amount of seats available. It's really not up to the guest to decide who goes.
I have been invited to many a wedding where no kids were welcome. That's fine. I respect the wishes of the bride and groom.
That would have pissed me off too if that had happened to us.

Either that, or call the bride and ask if I could bring a guest. I think it was tacky on the bride's part also to not allow for a guest on a single's invite.
I don't like doing things alone, that's for sure!

I'd be pissed too. Weddings are way too expensive today and in order to invite those you really want to invite and keep the cost down is to only invite one if you know that person isn't in a relationship or just starting a relationship.
And is the toilet paper over or under?

Genie--a coworker asked if she was registered. The reply was no, we don't need anything (you know what that means). Although the reception starts at 5 oclock....there is no sitdown meal. My sister tells me that the bride's stepdad is bringing cheese curds!!!!! I kid you not . Yes, this is in WI.

It's a society norm for someone to bring a date to a wedding UNLESS it's been clearly stated on the invite that they can't.

The bulk of you must've been fortunate to have someone pay for your wedding. I was not. To keep costs down (The Paramedic was in graduate school, so we had only my pitiful salary to work on) we invited guests for single people only if they'd been together for a while and were in a committed relationship. No one complained (at least to us) as they understood the situation. I also said no children, and the only person who complained was my cousin but I told her to stuff it 'cause I didn't like her anyway.
If you are the only invitee, you have a choice: either go as one, or don't go. It's in poor taste to ask the bride/groom to accommodate your "need" for a date, because they most assuredly considered that before they sent the invite out.

I think that if you can't account for seats for a person to invite the guest, then maybe that person isn't close enough to be invited to a small gathering. One less gift though...maybe.
