So, with all these Olympic trials going on, its gotten me wondering where a good high school friend of mine is now, we lost touch after about a year in college. She was at one time on the US National swim team, she was unbelievably gifted in swimming (we started swimming at the same time, look where I am now ) and for the Atlanta Olympics she was very close I remember (but didn't make it obviously). I've googled her name and found some impressive collegiate results (she beat her high school best at one meet I found). I wish I could find her now and catch back up with her. Unfortunately her name is fairly common. Also, I suspect she may be married. But I was pretty amazed I actually found articles on her and race results. I know I could get access to her email if she's registered via Classmates.com and I paid the money to get access to it (but I don't want to). Have you ever hunted someone down via the internet?

Never really hunted down people.
I do google some old friends ever now and then. Rarely do I make contact though

I successfully hunted someone down. On my July 2000 kids board at iVillage right after 9/11, we had a missing board member who worked at the Pentagon. We had her name and the city where she lived, but that was it. I ended up finding her via classmates.com. I had to call a few people with the same name, but ended up finding her father & his wife, so she put Amy in touch with me. It was quite a big deal.
She and I are very close now, we've met IRL, and she sent me a special Pentagon 9/11 pin that only those who work at the Pentagon have. Very sweet gal she is.
So try classmates.com, perhaps she is registered with her maiden & married name. It's worth a shot. Let us know how you make out.
Edited to add for clarity that if you had her married name via classmates, you wouldn't necessarily have to pay to find her email address, you could then do a search for her email via one of the search engines (lycos, yahoo, etc) with her married name. And I agree, email those you do have, since there are probably a few, and just tell them who you are and what you are doing. Worst case scenario they say "hey, I'm not her," right? Do one email and then BCC the rest, KWIM?
I had a paid subscription to classmates.com, but don't think it's still working otherwise I'd do it for you.

"Excuse me if this isn't the right email address, but I thought I'd give it a try."
Actually, it's amazing how much information total strangers online will give you when you're trying to track down somebody.
By the way... where is Shannon these days?

Go for it. I located an old friend of mine after 9/11...he was from Pakistan, and I was concerned about him. We are now still in touch and good friends after not contacting each other after 15 years.
Then, in 2002, I got an email from one of my old best friends from high school, who had gotten married and gotten out of touch. We are now best of friends once again, 20 years later, and I'm so happy that he contacted me.
Myself, I found one of the few people from high school at classmates.com that I would care to keep in contact with, and we're good friends again..
With the internet, anymore, it's just not that weird to get in touch later. Or at least I don't think so anymore. Life's too short.

My very best friend from HS found me on the internet through Classmates. She contacted me last year. We lost touch when I went to Florida State and I had always regreted it. She was the one missing person from my wedding party when I got married.
Anyway, she paid the fee at Classmates to find out my information and emailed me right away. We now correspond quite often. She is living in the UK and just had her first baby. It's a great feeling to reconnect with someone you lost touch with for no reason at all.

Alright, call me a stalker. I have looked up a few people on line (including myself just to see how easy it was) and have a few techniques. Here's an easy solution if you know where the person lives. Try www.whitepages.com Anybody listed in a phone book will be there. I did this on myself and couldn't believe how easy I found myself, including a map of how to get to my house. A stalkers dream come true.
The other method I've used is a google search to find an old friend. Strangely enough, there happened to be an article in a university alumni story with her name in it and I was able to find out more about her. Usually you have to search deep into the google pages to find them.
The other method I've used before was checking through Instant Messagner accounts. Type the person's name in "searching for a contact", like John Doe@hotmail.com and you wouldn't believe who you might find. I was once enamoured with a speed skater from the Salt Lake City Olympics and was able to find her on IM and actually chatted with her. It was way cool and she was really nice about it.
Hope some of this helps.

You can go to google.com and type in a phone number. If it's a match, it will give you a name, address and a map to the location.

I'd do it.
It's not really stalking until their lawyer calls you. Besides, once the EPO comes through you just have to quit doing whatever for a while and the the EPO expires and you can get back to contacting them.
It's not really "hunting" them down. I love hearing from people that I've not heard from in a while. Especially via e-mail. It's anonymous and safe, and if I don't want to talk to them, I can just write "nice hearing from ya" and leave it at that.

Every so often when my dad was stilll alive (or I thought he was) I would google him just to be sure there weren't any new charges against him.
I google my sister every now and again too.

I use, reversedirectory, infospace, 411.com, whitepages to help hunt down people we are looking for, then again we have this cool computer in the station that tells me a lot of info about people if I want.
But it is tracked very carefully and we must have a reason for every person we run.

This one time at band camp, I stalked Lisa from Boston. Anyway, there are really two Lisa from Bostons and they apparently get each other's email quite a bit. The undesired LfB was kind enough to forward me on the the Cool Running LfB so that I could rant about her Oscar Contest being rigged.
True story.
