I saw an ad for Claritin today and RR's thread made make me think of it again. "Prescription strength Claritin now available over the counter!" Do you prefer this or keeping the prescription? For me, I benefit if the drug stays prescription because the insurance will pick it up, whereas if its over the counter I pay 100%. I take over $300 of prescription drugs each month so I really appreciate the insurance benefits.
Just curious if anyone else in a different position sees these ads and thinks "YES! Finally its over the counter!"

I see both sides.
The military is really hesitant to pick up any new drugs and is very hesitant to prescribe them once they do. (I've been told they're only allowed to prescribe certain meds)
I am tickled that Claritan is now OTC and even happier about Prilosec. These two are very hard to get prescribed.
But, I can bet that gets expensive really quick. I figured that out with Pepcid. That stuff ROCKS, but it was really pricey until they came up with generics.

My copay for my maxalt is $55. So if it ever went OTC, I might be able to get more of it (I can only get 12 a month and sometimes that just doesn't cut it) and for cheaper... I'm still waiting.
Once they started selling liquid motrin for kids OTC (they haven't always), they stopped covering the prescription. At the time, we had a zero copay on Rx, so I was bummed.
So it really depends, I guess.

I guess my question is...do you pay for your health insurance? 'Cause if you do, you're still paying. I pay ~$250/month to insure me and my family. I sure as hell don't spend $250/month on any drugs, and we rarely go to the doctor.

No, thats how much the drugs are, I pay that amount for them and then my insurance reimburses me for what they cover later on.
