I was scrambling for something to do with my 5th graders this morning. We're done with the "official" learning, and I've spent 2 weeks doing rhythm instruments with them. So they come in and sit down just a few minutes ago and get perfectly silent. So silent that I ask them why they are so quiet. "We're supposed to be aren't we?" I say yes, but you're never this quiet. "can we do the instruments again today?" "what are we going to do?" I said I was thinking about doing "worksheets" but that they could do the instruments IF they wrote their own rhythms today. So right now they are busy writing! We'll start performing them in a few minutes. I've already looked at a few rhythms: they are hard!

It's amazing what you can get a group of kids to do when you make them think they are, in a way, in charge of their work!
