I have student who is Jehovah's Witness. I have a question about some patriotic things we'll be doing in music class. I will most likely end up calling his parents, but for now, I need some general info.

anyone out there have a clue?

pm is fine.

Jehova's Witnesses do not pledge allegiance to the flag, so I think they may have reservations about participating in a patriotic pageant.

Like the others said, checking with the parents may be the best way to go on this.

not a pageant, just part of the learning experience.

Well, if you're studying US history that may be one thing. I think they have strictures about the pledging and related activities.

I teach the Star-Spangled Banner for a number of reasons: so that students actually know the words, it's a good way for me to teach proper singing techniques, the song is often used for auditioning into other choral groups. When we learn the song, we also learn the history of the song, when it was written, under what circumstances etc.

write a note and request that they advise what "Bobby" can participate in. Strongly urge the historical information is a must, but I highly doubt they want Bobby to learn the words and definitely not sing it. Give them some time to respond as they might have to "consult" with their elders about the matter.
