Posted: 09/14/04 - 15:05 Post subject: so I evacuated
my 40 story office building. I'm at home right now. They never sounded the fire alarm, just certain people got word to "get out NOW". The rest of us had to pick up on such signals as: electricity flickering, our computer system shutting down, no water pressure, the uncanny smell of electrical fire/burnt plastic, the elevators no longer working, all our VPs RUNNING for the stairs, about half of HPD/HFD surrounding our block.... call me crazy, I thought those were cues to leave....talk about a botched emergency plan. As far as I know everyone is okay in our company, although the floor with the explosion had some injured people taken away. Fire in a skyscraper is just something I don't like to mess with.

Uh, yeah
Some thoughts from the incident:
My company, despite some memo that was typed in '67 and has been recirculated annually since, has no emergency plan. Half the company went to various Starbucks, a few went to eat lunch, a few called their drivers to take them God knows where and the rest of us went to adjacent office buildings to get out of the mid 90s temps. I heard from so&so who heard from so&so who heard from so&so who heard from that law firm on the 26th floor while we were standing at Subway that electricity won't even be restored tonight. Go home. okay....
SEVERAL of my coworkers (and I'm not including one in a wheelchair, that doesn't count) are physically unable to manage 30 or so flights down, mostly due to sheer mass. I understand that isn't a daily requirement of our job, and it was a long way down, but it was very interesting to see who needed rest breaks midway down (or as one of my coworkers eloquently put it, "who would have been trampled had it been bigger" ) Suggested new job requirement: be physically able to evacuate from the floor you are assigned. Or at least cut your frappacino habit accordingly.
Firefighters have their own secret elevators
People from our building and others are easily amused just watching 10 or so fire trucks and dozens of police cars parked in the street. Hundreds of people were standing watching the trucks. In park. No action.
at least 5 of my coworkers left their keys and/or wallets.
I think thats all the observations I have for now.

Any idea what happened yet??
I can't believe your company does not have an evacuation plan. I thought that was required by insurance or something.

I bet your firm will have a revised plan in the next week or so. You guys are very lucky that no one was killed.

What a scary occurrence. I can only imagine what would happen in a Sept. 11th like scenario.
Glad you're OK.
