Wouldn't it have been easier to shoo out 1 intruder instead of 500 students?

If the intruder has a gun--I don't think so!

So all 500 students should shuffle through the halls so the guy with the gun can get an easy shot at them?

Good point! and I guess in that case hopfully the police could escort them all out safely.
Hmmmm, maybe the intruder is claiming to have a bomb--that would probably be a good reason for leaving, right?
Guess we will have to wait and see what keltic finds out.

our high school is about 1600 students. I did find out that the intruder was a former student. I haven't heard much else yet.

Lots of schools have lock down procedures in the event like this or procedures to remove as many kids out of the danger area asap. It actually is a very good idea.
Our policy is once we get three guys on location at the school we go in. It does not matter the age of the person...He or she has a gun and does not drop the gun they will die. We carry body armor in our cars along with building entry guns to go after the bad guy. We will not wait for SWAT or anyone else. We go in period.
This also applies to office buildings etc.
Our belief is if someone is in with a gun, they pose more of a threat alive with hostages so we will go in and remove them by force rather than let the situation wane on

Yes-we do not mess around. We will shoot to kill even if it is young student. It is a harsh policy but lives are on the line. No unnecessary deaths on my watch John.

Sue we would not shoot an intruder. Only if he/she has a gun would we respond that way. Otherwise we take them very seriously and they would be removed by force. I think you should feel better with our policy because at least we are acting instead of standing around right

we do have lock down procedures and crisis management teams
and here's what the school website says, although I'm embarassed by the mistake:
The senior high school has been dismissed early today,
March 4, 2003
do to a security concern.
All Elementary Schools and both Junior High schools
are on a normal schedule and reporting as usual.
