this is probably a long shot, but does anyone have expereince with RNase zapper? or know where i can find some; info that is?
so ive spent my whole summer slicing away. last week one of my lab mates who will be running some of the same assays on his brains asked me if i was keeping everything rnase free. uhh, no. noone mentioned to me that we had changed plans on what we were going to be doing... so 70 of 100 brains are probably dripping my my rna...
so we have this rnase zapper stuff that i can simply spray on all surfaces and wipe away to uncontaminate my work area. prob is that im slicing in a cryostat at -20deg C. the darn stuff freezes on contact with anything in the chamber.
so ive checked the manufactuers web site and it doesnt really have any infor about how to use the product. does anyone here have any suggestions?

ok, not a science person, but love finding things on the web. If I were you, I'd do a specific search (my search engine of choice is copernic, it's a download that searches a dozen or so search engines) for the trade name of what you are using. I did find info re: ribonuclease, but nothing specific to "zapper".
It could be that there is nothing on the web regarding this, but I find that hard to believe.
good luck in your hunting!

Ambion makes RNaseZAP wipes, which should do the trick before freezing. You could also try a mild bleach or NaOH solution. I think it is the spray that is your problem. The droplets are so small that they freeze on contact. A larger volume of solution shouldn't freeze immediately. Try pouring the stuff from your spray bottle onto a kimwipe and see if that works.

I've always been told that RNase sprays were one of those unnecessary products... they make you paranoid and then sell you something to fix a problem you didn't really have.
As long as you've been wearing gloves and using either dedicated or regularly cleaned tools, I would think you're pretty much ok. I always wipe down the work surface with something like bleach, too.
BUT... since you already have the spray, I would do what OL said and pour some onto a kimwipe, otherwise you'll just have lovely ice crystals.
If all else fails, call the company who makes it. They usually have great support people who can tell you how it was meant to be used, or work with you for your specific problem.
