I just don't understand it.

Not to make light of what happened, but I heard on the radio that the shooter was a quiet kid who was something of a loner, didn't have a lot of friends and was teased from time to time.

That describes so many people, including me. It's limiting whatever understanding of who he was and why he might have done it. It's hard enough to grasp what turned the switch in his head when he isn't "that loner who was teased who probably listened to Marilyn Manson".

But I just don't understand it.

Not too far from here. Red Lake is a very 'closed' community. I hope the truth comes out, but Indian reservations are a whole different culture with stresses and situations we'll never grasp. I sat with my jaw on my chest and a lump in my throat watching the news last night. Evil so close to home is downright frightening.

and it seems to describe most people who do things like this. I'm am constantly amazed at how many neighbors, friends, co-workers, classmates etc, who come up with this description of the "alleged" killer (no matter what the situation is) the fact is that there is something within the person that no one else knows or suspects, that causes the person to do this.

What I do understand is that we all share in the responsibility of trying to do better. And we can only take responsibility for our own actions.

If I live in a way that shows more compassion and love to the people around me, the world can only be made better. I know I need to do better.

Cutting edge philosophy I know. Wink

Love has to become the foundation and motivation for all of our actions. I think any radical who has ever made a positive difference in society has been consumed by a love for humanity.

Sorry, but stories like this always bring me back to starting points. It helps me to feel grounded.

And besides, Jesus and the Beatles both agree with me.

Is it me, or is there not NEARLY the media attention on this one? I know there weren't as many killed as columbine, but it's still important, isn't it? Is it because it's on a reservation? Upper Middle of Nowhere? What?

That and the fact that the media is already inundating us with Terry Schiavo, Michael Jackson, etc.

Plus, it's happened before. There was one in Minnesota last year, so after Columbine it's really not as new and shocking as it was the first time.
