Posted: 07/11/05 - 17:36 Post subject: scariest storm ever... or war of the worlds in my backyard..
so last night was this badass storm we've been waiting for.
now bear with me - it's not a hurricane in florida - but i've never seen an electrical storm like it...
here i am with my girl - watching suspect zero (semi-interesting movie, for those concerned) - in my room upstairs.
it's around 930, and we hear this whoooooshing sound. kinda like sheets of rain have just started coming down (which is how the rain we've been dealing with lately has happened).
so my girl peeks out the window - and she goes "oh wow, it's wind". no rain anywhere. but crazy loud wind.
we notice the big big tree in my neighbours yard bending - some big branches start flying - and FLASH - big orange firey sparks of something exploding in the tree.
IN THE TREE.
power flashes on and off like 3 times in a span of like 5 seconds..
so i'm FLYING my ass down the stairs - mumbling a bunch of profanities and blurting out something about "fire - yard - back - trees" and pointing as i raced out the backdoor to make sure the neighbourhood wasn't about to catch fire... (as my mom says "more descriptive words, less profanity").
dad gets on the cell - he's calling the fire department (who had strange problems identifying our street - x street? no Y STREET! is that by z street? i don't know it's Y STREET - went the convo with dispatch)... we go outside, and oh my - a FUNNEL cloud is above our house.
i think our city gets like 7 tornadoes a year. imagine our surprise when we notice the SECOND funnel cloud above our house.
fire dept. gets here - (as the fire fighters Ooooh and Aaah, over the funnel cloud) they notice that nothing is really wrong - the lines just touched together.
as it turns out - after i bailed from my room - my g/f kept watching as the 6 or 7 pops happened up and down the lines behind the neighbours yards...
we're sitting around trying to settle down a little bit as the funnel clouds kinda just take off to do their thing... the g/fs parents pick her up - and they went for a quick ride around, and notice major hail a block or two over (that never came near our house)...
so i've decided to try to go to bed.
in the meantime - there is the most insane amount of lightning i've ever seen in my life going on north of my house... like non stop flashing for hours. with no thunder (those that have seen war of the worlds will have an idea of what i mean).
it's pretty hard trying to fall asleep to that when you saw the powerlines bursting earlier...
finally fall asleep - only to wake up around 1am, as we now hear thunder -the loudest thunder ever - just POPPING in the scariest manner what seems like right outside the house. which is REALLY helpful for my already razzled state.
again back to sleep - and mom comes rushing in at 230 am - wait for it - there's the proverbial water in the basement... the whole family is up, mopping, vacuuming, or plain old scooping the water out of the window wells outside.
about an hour of that and we had it under control and i went back to bed... the best i could with the lightning - and oh, the air conditioning went out. which was super.
at any rate - i can safely say that for the first time in a very very long time i was legitimately scared of a storm (as were most of my coworkers when we talked this morning). never seen so much lightning in my life.
never.
that's my story.

Wow! As cool as that was, I would have been really scared as well!
I would have definitely wondered if it was the end of the world!

I think it's a little less War of the Worlds and a little more "Close Encounters". Did you get a compulsion to play the same five notes over and over on a toy piano?

well it's not like the basement was far away... we'll call it deer in headlights syndrom
cheryl - the best was adapting it to the various audiences i relayed the story to today, as my one friend says "you didn't actually say 'oh SNAP' did you?" lol.
needless to say, i like winter storms better. worse case scenario you get a snow day. those i'm used too.

ohhh, just got word that the twister hit at a friend of the g/fs house (or the winds anyway - having trouble figuring the exact details out).
i'm trying to get the pictures up of her 200 year old tree that snapped in half. and another tree that looks like it was unwound or something...
she was telling us about how they could all of a sudden feel the temperature drop about 10 degrees, over a span of like 10 minutes.
it's too bad the newspapers hit the presses so early - it'll be interesting to read the coverage tomorrow.
