I am a runner. Note the absence of the words good, elite, fast etc... I am a runner because it is something that is part of my life.
Several years ago, I just ran. I hated it. It was something I had to do, not something I wanted to do, or enjoyed. Now (most days) I look forward to my run. I eat better so I'll feel better running. I plan my run around other activities instead of just missing it.
Most of all, I am a runner because that is what I choose to believe I am.
