I'm an underachiever. We suspect that I've been running my last few marathons in the "comfort zone" rather than "slightly uncomfortable"
This week I start a new pace for marathon paced runs. 15 seconds faster per mile!!!!!!!! I have to relearn what sustaining a little discomfort means.
why do I hear Kenny Loggins voice from Topgun ringing "fly into the danger zone"???????

I wish I could "underachieve" at that speed!
Good Luck with the new plan.

How true that is. Underacheiver is a strong word, sounds so negative. Which doesn't surprise me when hearing you talk about yourself. You have great potential and are holding back some I think. Time to throw down n see what you can do training wise. You can do this n it will be a huge confidience booster too.
BTW, I'm no where near your league and it's quite possible I don't know wtf I'm talking about.
Seriously RAS many of us look to you in awe. Best of luck in your new training program. I can't wait to hear about it.

I'm no where in your league either, but keep us posted on your progress with this. I'm a little bit guilty of this too, at the marathon distance. My times in shorter (up to the half) races predict that a BQ is well within my reach. However, when it comes to race day for a marathon, I do hold back. Having the wheels come off in a marathon scares me
I'm thinking too if I make some changes in my training I'll feel a bit more confident when I cross the start line of the marathon.

You'll never know if you don't have a go!
The point you make about making changes in your training has some merit. If you have plateaued and you are not getting the results you want, now may be a good time to change your program.
And never, never be scared be going into a race. So what if the wheels fall off?, there will be plenty of marathons down the track.

Thanks Phar Lap! I have been on a plateau. I use the same training program, run the same miles and duh, end up with the almost the same marathon time I have started adding a tempo run each week which I will turn into a longer, marathon pace run once training starts.
I just need to find 10 minutes.....

You can't be afraid of having the wheels come off in a 'thon. If you do all the training, and hold yourself back in the race because of that fear, you are only screwing yourself.
And, yes, I have had the wheels come off in a marathon. And others here have, too. You would not be the first, and you won't be the last.

This is why you're my coach. You know a lot more than you give yourself credit for.
