I have seen a couple of IUD's in my day....and in one case, the IED looked safer....
Honest...it looked like the auger end attachment for a drain cleaning machine...

interesting story...
I was a 'surprise' to my parents when they found out my mother was pregnant. My mother had an IUD in, they had a choice to try and take the IUD out and risk an abortion or leave it in and take the risk of it being either wrapped around my neck, or nothing happening at all.
My mother had a C-Section and I was born with the IUD sitting on top of my head

So, reading between the lines, you're saying an IUD is not always effective?
/I'd prefer to talk IEDs.

Here is my take on things...
Prior to having my second child I had to go to a seminar about birth control (thank you military regulations! ). I was all about getting my tubes tied after my second until I went to this seminar. At the seminar I realized that IUD's were the second most effective birth control method (first was the guys getting the "snip, snip"!!!). Getting your tubes tied is another good option but it is a surgical method and as with any surgery there is always the risk of death (at least they make you THINK you are going to die by the amount of paperwork you have to complete prior to any surgery).
The IUD is THE MOST EFFECTIVE procedure for women and is NOT a surgical procedure. I had every intension of getting one but it's been over a year now...I might have to pay for it myself. Not sure. Anyway, if I can get my military insurance to cover it I'm going to have one myself.
Getting your tubes tied is pretty much a "forever" thing. IUD's last about 10 years now and can always be removed (although not suggested). If you are looking for a long-term fix this is it. If you are looking for a short-term "I'm going to have babies in the next five years" I would look for something else.
