"Dear Teacher,
My husband just swam, biked, and ran a total of 140.6 miles in less than seventeen hours. My son is keeping him company for the day.
Sincerely,
RAS"
Or, just lie and say he's out sick.

I don't know what it's like where you are, but here, parents take their kids out of school for a week to go on cruises or to Disney World, so apparently it's not a problem to miss school and not be sick. If that's the case there, I think you could just explain the situation and say that he wanted to spend some time with his dad. I hope they have a great day together.

Lying isn't a very good example to set for your kids.

I've know I've had parents call for their child to be out for special reasons (ie visiting a grandparent, going somewhere special) and just said...
"I'm calling for my son Bryce today...he's going to be out." Don't say anything further. If questioned...say he's not feeling well. (make sure he eats a bag of Smarties and gets one gigantic belly ache... )
If he's going to get all of his work discounted or marked as unexcused...say that he's sick. Sorry. I hate telling people to lie, but where there's something important that a child has just experienced with a family member...those memories far outweigh a day in school. Your son will remember that day with his father than what was taught in math on 12.Sept.05. If they still let him make up missed work...try to get away with the first statement.
As a teacher, I overlook special things like that. It's the chronic whiny, sick kids that never get sympathy in my book.

His teacher has the same type of attitude, so i think it'll be okay with her. She doesn't give homework on Fridays because she wants kids to spend time with family. Plus, she's a big biker chic!
edited to add: other son falls into your 'no sympathy' book and that's why I drove him home.

Cool. I'd do it in a heartbeat. Those memories will sit in his mind forever and it's a wonderful father/son thing to do.
Wow.
Really. Wow.
