What did the animated pink feline have to do with the Peter Sellers movies?

He was in the credits at the beginning of the movie. The movie was about the pink panther diamond.

The "Pink Panther" was a very large diamond with a flaw in it that could be viewed as a panther. Since the diamond was generally pink, the stone was naturally called the Pink Panther.
The "Pink Feline" had his own cartoon show back in the 70's. In fact he was so popular that David Niven, who played Sir Charles Litton the thief, wanted to sue the movie company because the panther was more popular than him.
