Posted: 12/30/03 - 11:54 Post subject: quaestion about small brick workouts...
I posted this on beginnertriathlete.com as well but I would really enjoy hearing y'alls advice as well.......
Since I don't pick up my bike until the end of January so for the last week I have been going to the gym everyday and doing the following workout: 25 minutes on the stationary bike at 85-95 cadence immediately followed by a 1.5-2 mile walk/jog on the treadmill. I figured until I start incorporating a few days of swimming a week, it would be a good way to build up to my first T1 in mid-June. And it's a great way to get my heart rate up and sweat alot. I have had very little soreness in my legs and no pain in the knees since I started this routine. Is this workout o.k. to do 5-6 times a week? Gradually increasing my time on each? Or should I split up the activity..one day on bike..next on treadmill? If it matters I do an hour of resistance training three times a week following this cardio workout.....
Thanks,
Chris

Is it OK? Yes.
Is it the best use of time? Probably not. During the base phase you will need lots of time in the saddle. Alternate days of bike and run and use all your time for each. Do a brick once a week and you will be fine during the race.
